With the advent of so called VR ready laptops, we've been seeing more and more models equipped with 120Hz monitors. I was wondering if they're any good, and more specifically how they compare, in terms of responsiveness, to 120Hz desktop monitors from a couple years back, or even CRT's for that matter?
Thanks for the advice.

Laptop panels are basically crap for the most part. Desktop panels are far above and beyond in terms of response time. Colours and the need for colour calibration on laptop panels are also rather bleh in general, but that's another story.
It should really be night and day in terms of ghosting and such. I don't know about input lag on them. I also cannot comment on the relevance to CRTs. Most of them are also 6-bit colour... the only true 8-bit colour one I know of is the AUO B173HAN01.2 which is IPS and 25ms response time supposedly. It hasn't been tested yet that I've been able to find, unfortunately.TomJGX likes this. -
Are they all using the same panels?

From AUO:
The B156HTN05.2 (15", TN, supposedly 5ms response time, 8-bit colour I believe)
The B173HAN01.2 (17", AHVA aka IPS, unknown-but-likely 25ms response time, 8-bit colour)
The B173QTN01.0 (17", TN, near 10ms B2W and 27ms G2G response times, 6-bit + dithering colour for false 8-bit colour)
From Chi Mei:
The N173HHE-G32 (CMN1747) (17", TN, near 7ms B2W and 21ms G2G, unknown if 8-bit colour).
It doesn't matter whether you use Aorus, Alienware, Clevo rebrands, MSI, whatever. They WILL be using one of these four. MSI uses the Chi Mei in their GT73, and I haven't seen it used in any other notebook. The AUO ones are more popular.
@Kevin I think has a GT73VR with the Chi Mei panel; he may be able to tell us if 8-bit colour is selectable. -
