Quick question, would using a 130W power adapter on an Inspiron 9400 be safe? I am currently using a 90W adapter, however after overclocking and using an increased voltmod, there has been mention of using a 130W adapter to give the laptop enough 'juice'. Surely this could be detrimental for the laptop?

Should be safe it will also keep your power brick cooler
-
Nice thanks X2P, always had problems of my 90W being a little too hot for my liking too.
-
Wait till someone confirms though

I have used both 130W and 90W adapters with my M1210, which is designed for 65W. As long as the voltage is the same it is fine, current (amps) is only drawn as needed.

Agreed with tumnasgt, its the same as desktop power supplies, the watt rating is the 'peak' wattage the power supply can provide when its required. A little extra wouldn't hurt, escpecially if you're increasing the power draw of the laptop by overclocking.
Grand Admiral -
voltage x amp = watts (minimum your notebook needs to run properly)
-
yup, relatively safe. higher supply than load is better, makes a cooler power brick,
-
yes you should be fine as long as voltage is still the same iv used my 90 watt charger from my dv6000 in my brothers 65 watt dv6000 it only uses whats needed

A lot of laptop OCers get bigger power adapters.
I use a 120W, but I were to fiddle with OCing, I would need a 150W to be on the safe side. -
Thanks for the replies, I'm only gonna keep overvolting the 7900 GSX to 1.24v and I'm not gonna raise the clocks too far either, so I'll stick with getting a 130W.

Overvolting might give you a better OC but just be aware it also can fry your cpu alot easier.
The default voltage is enough to support a safe OC. Raising the voltage higher will just cause more heat -
