I've been looking for a 13" or 14" laptop but all of them have that dreadful 1366x768 resolution. The only one I've come across is the new Sony Vaio SA (13.3" with 1600x900) and the Alienware M14x (14.0" with 1600x900). Are these honestly the only 14-inches-or-less laptops with a higher resolution than 1366x768?

Lenovo's Ideapads and HP's upcoming SB Envy 14 all seem to be defaulting to a measly 1366x768 "standard". Will there be a 14-inch version of the Dell XPS 15z?

Some of the Z series Sony offer 1080p but start at like...2200+

Alot of business models offer HD+ for 14", Dell Latitude E6420, ThinkPad T420. Also older E6400/E6410 and T400/T410 offer 16:10 1440x900 panels.

These have weak GPUs though (NVS 4200M, HD 3000, etc). All the laptops I've seen with decent graphics have a crap resolution. What's the point of a great CPU+GPU combo if the screen can't take advantage of it?

Because they are cheap and cheerful.

IMO you aren't going to find a 14" laptop with a decent GPU and a decent screen without paying an arm and a leg. You're probably looking at the Alienware M14x or the Sony Z. Even the M14x, the GT555M gets smoked in most benchmarks by a 260M, not a super powerful GPU.

fixed, currently we have nothing that goes for the portability of the 14, that packs a decent punch, and no the m14x is more close to a 15''

there is the vaio CA, but they could have put something better in terms of gpu

    Other than the Vaio SA?

If the upcoming HP Envy 14 SB had 1600x900, I'd be all over that.

Hrm yeah forgot all about the Envy 14. Though when it lost the Radiance Display there became no reason to buy it..

If you were feeling confident then you might be able to replace the screen of an M14X with a higher resolution one. Bear in mind that it would probably cost you upwards of £200 for the screen.

m14x have the option to get a 900p screen, no need to buy aftermarket

and indeed the envy 14 was a lost product

Not following the latest models but check with ASUS 14" machines.

I am using a 3-yr old model (in the sig) which has 1440 x 900 resolution on a 14.1" panel. They may have some recent models too.

Even ASUS has been the victim of low resolution screens. Pretty much unless you are buying a ROG, you aren't getting a high res screen.

Bah! It's a shame that small but high-res screens have been isolated to premium (Sony Vaio) or extreme gaming (Alienware) laptops.

the C and E series is their cheapo line, and its not expensive the pricing is pretty much on par what other OEM charge for their mainstream consumer line.

The 13'' is the vaio premium line and its been for quite awhile. The F series is always the weirdo, underpowered and overpriced.

So the argument that the vaios are always premium is moot. Since the CA is the 14'' with the dual cores, and the 6630m along the 900p panel. And the the CB is the 15'' with a FHD panel, however underpowered with the 6630m
