I have a 14" WXGA+ non-LED display and was wondering the following. Are LED displays a lot brighter? Is the difference sufficient enough to upgrade?

They should be brighter and use up less energy than conventional CCFL backlights. However, the difference is not significant. LEDs do last a lot longer than CCFLs, but considering the average lifespan of laptops, it wont make a difference.

For indoor usage, I'd say stick with what you got. Now if you want to use it outside a higher nit screen will have its advantages. Plus upgrading your screen will void your warranty if you care.

That depends on what specific LED versus CCFL displays are in question. Some LED displays are a CCFL-level 200 nits, while some CCFL displays can reach up to 250 nits.

In general, LED displays are brighter and use less power than CCFL displays.

    So true.

To add: Some CCFL displays have double the contrast of LED displays.
