That opens up a world of possibilities....
-
That is awesome. It reminds me of the transparent screens seen in movies like Avatar, and other future based Sci-Fi movies. Were getting to the point where we can have holograms, we will get there eventually.
Now for the practicality of it. I think it would really annoy me if I was using it, but it's a cool gimmick. -
The first thing I think of is, it being used in department stores/malls, the window glass being a large OLED like this. That's just one of many possible applications.
Here's another cool one. The before-seen flexible OLED displays. I wonder what's happened to that tech? Has it been buried?
This video was made in 2007....

Put a camera on the lid. Or two, for 3D. Add a touchscreen.
Can you imagine augmented reality on that thing?! -
I think its pretty cool as far as a different idea and such..but yea..i don't think i'd like staring through it -
Well, but then what would be the point if you couldn't see through it? I stay with my original argument, it could be very useful for businesses. I still like the flexible display though.
-
this could be useful as a heads up display (HUD) for a lot of applications
like sunglasses from True Lies -

Cool, now everyone can see what I'm doing on my screen.
As noted, there are many possibilities for this type of technology . . . HUDs especially. -
now people can all watch together in the computer lab =P

@CZX58 Shadow...holograms? Been done.See description to the right.
As for the OLED, a few of years ago I was listening to my high school chem teacher talked about his work (years before he became a teacher) involving conducting polymers (think organic chem) and how they will be able to make TV screens out of these things at some point down the line. Why he gave up being a research chemist and became a teacher I don't know.He also had a couple other interesting projects before he left the job, including some sprayable polymer that had many medical applications (plus other strange possibilities).
Weird seeing what was an interesting class room story on the market today. -
I want OLED now
-
-
I remember at least five or six years ago reading that OLED was going to be implemented and in wide use by this time. Apparently something happened. Seems like an all-win situation. No backlight required so drastic power reduction and reduced weight. Obviously an awesome scenario for laptops.
-
That's just one step closer to hologram displays.
-
transparent OLED screens are old news by approx 18 months.
-
So we went from nice matte screens to anoying reflecting screens, and from those to transparent screens...Am I the only one not liking this? I want to see the things IN my screen, not anything in front of it (reflection) or behind it (transparant).
-
Looking at things in a 3D screen will require a rework of GUI and presentation theory. Most of us are used to running things in 2D, almost a bulletin board or chalkboard paradigm.
It's one thing to watch entertainment in 3D, quite another to use it for interactive information work. -
Finally, a screen that can be scratched on both sides!
-
And see fingerprints from both sides too!
-
-
Well I didn't know this thread belonged in the Hardware forum, but ok.
Unfortunately, I think most of the cool tech I would really like to see probably wont come out till I'm either a senior and too old to enjoy it, or dead.Being that I'm in my early 30s now, I just can't imagine true holographic displays, or other cool tech we see in sci-fi movies becoming a reality in my lifetime. Man I wish I was born a hundred years later.
-
Well this is totally impractical, BUT maybe it means you can have a second screen behind the first, with light polarized in different directions for 3D.
-
That's what people said about touch screens. -
-
-
One thing I noticed. Notice how the screen seems to have a bit of tint to it? It must be glossy. If they removed the gloss, it would probably be fully transparent, but would affect the readability I'm sure.
-
I see potential in the application for these. Put a solid white e-ink screen behind it. Then you could use it as a reading device when you want to save battery (PDFs), or as a laptop when the OLED screen is on.
-
Of course, I do make LOT's of mistakes. -
Definitely plenty of useful applications for a transparent screen but notebooks...and honestly general use desktops...aren't the best places I'd want to use them.
I'm sure just like glossy screens, PC manufacturers see them as a good marketing but I can't imagine screen glare and eye strain not being horrendous. I'm getting headaches just thinking about staring through a screen for prolonged periods of time.
Maybe one day though they'll get so cheap to make we can use them to replace windows (glass windows not the OS) and then when we don't like the dreary view outside we can photoshop in some sunshine...or even some flying pigs. -
