    Greetings,

I might have a dumb question. I am a resolution freak. I currently have a old compaq 2575 rig that has a 1400 x 1050 screen resolution which i simply love. I am thinking of replacing the 3 year old machine with a new laptop. My budget is between 1500-1800$.

I was wondering what the max resolution depends on? is it a graphics card option or other hardware related option? If it is graphics card related, do integrated graphics card support a 1400 x 1050 resolution. Also will I be able to get the same on a 14" laptop as opposed to a 15" machine.

    Thanks

Max res depends on the LCD screen itself -- modern graphics cards support resolutions of at least 1920x1200, so even integrated solutions will give you that minimum.

Most 14" notebook screens support a resolution of around 1280x768. Not sure if you can get anything higher than that.

BTW, with that budget you really should be getting a dedicated graphics solution, no need for an integrated solution with that kind of budget.

A few 14" business oriented laptops, like the Thinkpad T60, still offer SXGA+ resolution screens.

For 14" widescreen, the best you'll find is WXGA+ (1440 x 900) on the Dell Inspiron 640m, Dell Latitude D620, LG T1 and Lenovo Thinkpad Z61t. All the other 14" widescreens are only WXGA (1280 x 768/800).
