Is it technically possible to manufacture a 15.4" notebook with built in optical drive and weighs less than 4 pounds?
The closest I have seen is Panasonic Y7. 14.1", 3.3 pounds. http://www.dynamism.com/y7/specs.shtml
So, I think making a 15.4" notebook and weighs 4 pounds is not impossible. I am looking forward for the first company that could build it. If they could build it, it would be my dream machine.

It should not be impossible. I already worked out that adding two inches (5cm) to the width of the Sony G11 would be enough to hold a 14.1" widescreen panel, and pro-rata to the G11's 1.13kg (2.49lb) weight, it shouldn't be more than 1.4kg (3.1lb). However, the Fujitsu S6510 is the lightest of the existing 14.1 widescreen machines and weighs 4lbs. As the notebook size increases there will be bigger problems with ensuring rigidity while using lightweight materials. The squarer shape of the CF-Y7 makes it easier to ensure adequate strength while the unusual arrangement for the optical drive also saves a little weight.
It remains to be seen how long before the notebook of your dreams arrives, but when it does, will you be able to afford it?
