I know the Inspiron 2600 is old as dirt, but it meets the requirements for one particular audio app I want to use this lappy for (Rane Serato Scratch DJ program) until I can spring for a newer Inspiron later this year.

I have a 20Gb PATA Hitachi that came with this model, and I used a couple spare Best Buy gift cards that have been sitting unused for months to order the Seagate Momentus 5400.3, 160Gb model.

I didn't think about the possibility that there might be a chance that it's too big to work properly in this unit. Does anyone know if there is a size limit to what the Inspiron 2600 can handle (if any)?

Have you tried just installing it? As you already have it.

Did you get a PATA hard drive?

oh, I should have specified that I ordered it from Best Buy's website, as the local store didn't have it in stock (their notebook drive selection is minimal at best). It's due to arrive in a couple days.

yes, it's PATA. I don't SATA had even been released when this Dell was produced.

I see no reason why it won't work. The nice thing about getting it at BestBuy is will be easy to return if it doesn't work.

it should work unless there is a BIOS limitation which is possible but not likely. As long as it is PATA and not SATA then it will be fine.
