I was on Xotic PC today and I saw that they now offer a 160gb 7200rpm hard drive. I googled it and it appears to be a Seagate and it uses the new perpendicular storage technology. Anyone know anything else about it or how it performs?

That should be the fastest notebook hard drive out there now, but I don't have actual benches. The "old" leader was the 100GB@7200RPM drive, closely followed by the 160GB@5400RPM drive...I own both of those. But 160GB@7200RPM should smoke them both.

EDIT: oops, the new drive isn't in the picture, sorry -
Have posted a graph with all drives (including the new seagates).
It is indeed the fastest drive available but don't expect miracles. The access time has NOT improved in comparison to older 7200 drives. -
how much heat difference can one expect from a 5300.3 and a 7200.2?
i'm waiting for more reviews on a 160gb 7200.2 myself. -
This seems to be the best review I was able to find.

yup, read that one myself. i'm sure someone here will do a side by side comparison to the 5300.3.

Man, almost makes me wish I waited instead of buying my 100 gb drive, I could really use the space. Almost.
