I am looking at a Sony FZ with this drive option with 256mb of flash memory. It is only $30 more. Does this offer any value/advantage - has this proven out to save battery life?

Or for $70 more, I can just get a 250gb/5400rpm.

    I would get the 250gb 5400rpm drive.
Their is no advantage of hybrid flash memory on a harddrive. It does nothing to improve bandwdth of the drive, or cut power draw.
Either the 160gb or 5400gb standard 5400rpm drives would suffice.
keep in mind that the 250gb 5400rpm drive is faster than the 160gb drive cause it has a higher data density.

K-TRON - thanks, I assumed it was more of a gimmick as it does not seem to be popular. Yes, I have been reading a lot about 5400 vs 7200, etc. here and you have been very informative (as well as many others).

Another one - 200gb @ 7200 or 250gb @ 5400 (same price for either)? Based on what I have read, the 7200 in this size would probably be a little faster particularly on seek times, but as a regular computer user I would probably not notice any difference.

    Thanks again.

Yep, that is correct. The 200GB @ 7200 would be a faster on seek access times and overall will be slightly faster than the 250GB. But you probably won't notice the difference between the two drives even if you had both to test with.

In direct comparison, the 250GB would be much faster than the hybrid drive.
