I am about to order a Samsung X65 but am having a last minute panic about the resolution and wondering if i am going to hate it when i turn the machine on.
How small do icons and text appear on a 15.4" @ WSXGA resolution?
I'm goping form a 15.4" 1280 x 800 so it is quite a jump for me and am not sure how different things are going to appear.
I've got a 22" screen on my desktop that runs at 1680x1050 and that is fine but obviously it is a lot bigger.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Also i've tried a few local retailers to see how they look but none of them had a 15.4 over a resolution of 1280 x 800![]()

if you have never seen one i def sugg it before jumping onto a high res like that. imo its not at all bad but yes stuff is pretty small.. it will in no way look like your 22" does everything will be far smaller than that. i know it stinks most retialers dont carry them. maybe try a sony store? or dell or apple store??

If you can't find one, you can try playing with the resolution of your other screen. Try putting the 22" @ a higher reso, and see if you still like it

I have 2 widescreen 15.4in laptop running on 1680*1050 and it works fine... everything is easy enough to read.... if you don,t like it... you can always bring the resolution back down or you can make you icons a little bigger... don't let that stop you from buying a laptop....unless you have severe eye problems....

I notebook I just got has a 1680X1050 and I love it. The clarity is stunning! I had a 1280X800 15.4 before and I will never look back. I got on my desktop for a while yesterday (19"lcd) and for the first time it ever it looked terrible to me!! if you concerned with icons and text size you can always increase it in windows.

Definitely get out to a store and look at it first, it's not for everyone. I love it but I wouldn't go shouting for everyone to use it because it comes down to personal preference.
The only suggestion I can offer is if you do decide going with that res, do get the highest quality you can get, because that will make all the difference in the world. -

You have a valid concern. If you have problems reading the small print at the bottom of some documents then this resolution is probably too high. But if your vision is OK then I would expect you to be happy. If your eyes are old then a lower resolution would be better. Unfortunately, need to use a disply for some hours, maybe days, before being able to decide if it is OK.
To some extent you can compensate in software, by changing the display's DPI setting. 1680 x 1050 @ 15.4" is 128 pixels per inch, so that's the setting you would need to use to get 10 point print to display the right size. However, formatting will fall apart since many windows and boxes are sized in pixels assuming the default 96dpi (I have used 108 dpi without too many problems). Alternatively, you can change the displays logical resolution to something a bit bigger, such as 1440 x 900, although this will give some loss of sharpness.
The underlying problem is that most 15.4" panels are either 1280 x 800 or 1680 x 1050 with only a few at 1440 x 900 which, in my opinion, is a good compromise.

Thanks for that. No i'm only in my mid 20's so my eyesight is fine. I just decided that the WSXGA was great for photoshop but forgot that i do need to use word and excel.
But from what people have said, i have good eyesight so i think any "problems" will just be me needing to get used to the change.
Thanks for everyones help. -
i think you will love it once you use it. as you said you just need to get used to it but doesnt take long

What's wrong with 1280x800 on a 15.4" screen? It's not just for people with weak vision.

I currently have a notebook with 1280x800 and i struggle to edit my photographs on there. So i thought the extra resolution would help in that respect.

my dv9500t hasa 17in LCD at 1440X900 with its WXGA+ screen. I work on my desktop's 1650X1050, i can't imagine working at 1650X1050 on my 17in screen. Everything would just seem way too cramped

I got LASIK and I have 20/15 vision.
I just got a WSXGA+ screen on my Vostro, and I love it. It is super crisp.
Text is small and highly defined. I like it. But, for example, my elderly parents wouldn't be able to use it at all.
The LG 1680x1050 panel in the Vostros is the nicest mobile display I have ever seen. But, I also remember when the Mac SE was considered a "portable" and mobiles in the PC world weighed 15lbs. -

I was once in your shoes before and struggle hard on which resolution to get. Btw I have bad vision (a reason why glasses is on my nose all the time) and wsxga+ is not a big problem to me after increasing font and icons a tad bigger.

Having received my X65 I can say that i am pleased with the purchase and the screen resolution. I think 1440x900 would ahve been a better option (if available) but 1680x1050 is certainly useable.
In the end I found a 17" Sony with a native resolution of 1920x1200 and that was comfortable so i figured 1920x1200 on a 17" would be pretty much the same as 1680x1050 on a 15.4".
