    The question: Possible or not?

With 8GB DDR3 sticks so cheap right now, I am considering the upgrade. Yes, I can make use of all that RAM. But does the GM45 on my SL510 support it?

Intel says 8GB max in their specs. But back then, 8GB sticks didn't even exist.
The specs for the X301 here:
    Category:X301 - ThinkWiki
Say it's possible, and I doubt this machine has 4 RAM slots. Could that be a mistake?

    So, what's the truth?

Montevina platform (PM/GM45) caps out at 8GB. If you need 16GB, buy a Sandy Bridge machine.

Sadly, no :( I too looked into this as I also have a GM45 chipset. It seems most GM45's wont post with 2x8GB sticks installed.

I don't know how many people has MAA83 in mind, but I know that it's the very same story with G/PM965. Specs say 4Gigs max, but some boot with 8, other with 6 and third doesn't boot at all. So you'll never know till you try :)

Some of that was vendor BIOS, but it seems the Intel spec does cap at 8GB, likely as result of all consumer chipset having a cap (reserve the best for workstation/server chipsets?)?

So it is certain that it won't work under any circumstances?

Pretty sure 16Gb is out of the question, 8GB might just work though, if the sticks are cheap enough, you could always try it, but i doubt it'll work.

If Intel's information is to be taken into account, then 8GB is the maximum.
Yes, there are cases where their own info is not accurate, but for the most part, stick with what they say (unless we are talking about rare cases).

If 16GB fails to post then worth trying 12GB/10GB/9GB. A Sony Z13 boots with 12GB but fails with 16GB. It uses a one-gen newer chipset. Seems the bios maps some stuff into it's 12GB-16GB region.

Tell me about it, the memory controller on the 920xm, is listed with 8GB max memory, strangely, it handles 16GB just fine ;).

    Yup.
And if I'm not mistaken, there are laptops with 2670qm which are offered with 32BG RAM when the 16GB is supposed to be the official maximum for that cpu (at least per intel).

With so many variables better if you can borrow the memory and give it a try.

For those interested, I recently tried 8+8, 8+4 and 4+8. No combination managed to POST, all I get is a constant beep. Oh well...

They said the chipset in my laptop only supported 4gb ram yet i have 1gb and 4gb stick in it @ 5gb and TirTurbo has 2x 4gb sticks in his @ 8gb. The truth is probably that your chipset does support 16gb.

I was wondering if you managed to get a single 8GB module to work. My notebook's specs state a maximum of 8GB, so would a single 8GB module suffice, or would I need 2 x 4GB modules?

No, single modules did not work either. Max 4GB per module.

The GM45 chipset supports up to 8GB RAM (which is what I mentioned in my first post on this page).
Intel's info on those (and PM45 chipsets) is fairly consistent with what the hardware itself allows, and since 8GB RAM is an apparent maximum, you would have to use 2 sticks... each being 4GB to result in 8GB that would actually work.

Actually if I remember it is 4 GB per bank for the PM45 & GM45. Now for the rare system with 0, 1, 2 and 3 banks then 16 GB is possible................
