on which monitor would a high def movie look better? i understand that the 1920x1080 has more pixels but since the pixels are about the same size does that mean there would not be much of a difference in picture quality? for example, if i look at the 17" wxga+ from a closer distance than the 24" so that they appeared to be the same size, would resolution look the same also?

Supposedly a full high-def BD movie resolution is 1920x1080 pixels so I think going any lower than that the movie would not look much better than with this native res.
But w0t, a 24" laptop? -
the 17" pixels may be same size (i don't really know exactly but sounds about right) but you would be missing so many pixels and scaled down, i'm sure it would look horrible side by side next to the 24"

WXGA+ is 1440x900, which in a 17” has a dot pitch of 0.254mm; 1920x1200 on a 24” has a dot pitch of 0.270mm, which as you can see is very close. Therefore you are right about the pixel size. But a HD movie has a resolution of 1980x1080 which means it has to be down scaled to fit a 17” WXGA+ screen. This will lose some detail. Therefore it won’t be the same.
Besides, a bigger screen gives you the illusion of detail, and your experience is better. Studies have shown that screen size and your attention to what is on the screen are proportional to one another. That is why you get more thrill when watching an action movie in a theater than sitting in front of your notebook.
17" wxga+ vs. 24" 1920x1080
