OK kids...here is the skinny. I want to start a comparison thread between these two heavy hitters! The HanStarr is OE on the Asus G73SW line and the AUOptronics is apparently a very competitive if not better upgrade according to some.
Heres the basic info and I will; let more informed people fill in the blanks:
AUOptronics model #: B173HW01
Sub: V4 is the newest Glossy screen, v5 is the newest Matte screen
Response Time: 2ms
Resolution: 1920x1080 TFT LED
Brightness: 250cd/m (ive seen some sites reporting up to 300-350???)
HanStarr Model #: HSD173TW1
Dont have much info on this. it matches most of the specs for the AUOptronics
Now from what Ive read the HanStarr is a great display. But Ive also read that those people with a G73 that are stuck with the 1600x900 reion screens chose the AUO screen over tha HanStarr screen and rave about its quality. Id like to hear input on both is possible. I can get either of these units for dirt cheap, so Id like to choose wiser at this point.

Thorough tests on the G73SW Hannstar panel: AnandTech - ASUS G73SW + SNB: Third Time?s the Charm?.
You should try to find similar data on the AUO and compare them. If you are switching from a 900p panel, any of those two should serve you well. I'd get a 95% gamut matte panel if possible though. -
Im actually upgrading from a 1440x900 panel on an old HP. and my buddy is upgrading his G73 with a 900P screen. I know the HanStarr is well documented, but the AUO screen are everywhere and have great reviews as well.
Thanks for the link, I will read up no it! -
You do know that 1440x900 is 16:10 while 1920x1080 is 16:9. If you want to upgrade, you'll probably need a 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 panel, also if it's a CCFL, you probably won't be able to upgrade to a LED panel.

True. but the video card is capable of displaying the resolution and the ribbon cable match. cant image it wouldnt work or am I mistaken?
-
Your bezel and the mounts for the lcd are made for a 16:10 lcd, it's not necessarily a problem of the components not working together, more of it won't physically fit into the unit without modding. Also, there's the CCFL vs LED issue you have to make sure of as well.

Hmmm...modification does sound fun!

Found a 17.3" 1920x1200 (WUXGA/16:10) LED 40-pin screen. I would assume that would work since I have a 17.3" 1440x900 (16:10) CCFL 40-pin. Am I correct?
