I just got two Corsair 1GB chips to replace a single 512MB chip that came with a Acer Aspire 3610 laptop that I bought from a friend. Is there a physical difference between a 512 & a 1GB? The slot in both the new 1GB chips are located one slot width to the right when compared to the 512 chip thats in there. Is this a manufacturing defect, or is there something else that I don't know about?

Can you tell us what type of RAM your laptop takes and what RAM type you purchased?

You have to give more spec for your laptop. What year was it produced? Processor?

It's could be you didn't align it properly, it could be it's the wrong type of memory?

You bought the wrong RAM. You bought DDR2 you need DDR.

Crucual thinks the 3610 uses DDR2.

Are the RAM modules too long? Perhaps you bought standard desktop DDR2 RAM. You need 200 pin DDR2 SODIMM (Small Outline DIMM).

    What powerpack said

DDR2 memory has a notch in a different place than DDR memory.

When buying memory for your laptop here is what you do:
    1) make sure you look at notebook memory, and not desktop memory
    2) run cpu-z to find the information and tech specs on your memory
    3) open up the memory bay and read the sticker on the memory
    4) go to crucial memory's website and run the little mem test configurator thing, and it will tell you the maximum memory capacity your laptop can handle.
    5) go to newegg/zipzoomfly/tiger direct/ or wherever, and look for memory which has the same specs as the memory you have.
    6) select a higher capacity memory card which utilizes the same kind of memory and the same frequency bus.
    7) buy ram
    8) wait for it to arrive
    9) open memory bay up
    10) install memory
    11) close memory bay
    12) power it up
    13) the system will say "the amount of system memory has changed... press F1 to continue, press F2 to enter setup"
    14) press F1 and the operating system goes.

    Thats it.

    I hope this helps

You know he did not give us enough info it could be he bought DDR and needs DDR2 as I don't know how he is holding them, upside down right side up, one up one down. I guess the only way he could answer, is which ones slot is closer to center as which way he is holding has no affect on that. ;) :)
