    Hi

Just bought a laptop with an 8gb RAM module.

I have another 4gb one with the same speed and other characteristics.

Will that 12gb ram run in dual channel?

You will run in asynchronous dual channel. The first 8 GB will run in dual channel (4 from the 8 GB SODIMM and 4 from the 4 GB SODIMM) while the remaining 4 GB will run in single channel. Unless you go over 8 GB, everything in memory will be running in dual channel mode.
