    Sup folks,

    I just upgraded my E1705 from 2 x 512MB (533Mhz) RAM to 2 x 1GB (667Mhz) RAM (G.Skill from newegg, AWESOME RAM!). I'm really happy with it, but ...

I'm currently running XP SP2 on it, and Vista Build 5728 (post-RC1 build) on a second partition. Both run super smoothly, but Vista boots up with over 500MB Ram taken up already, after tuning! Now, I'm planning on running Vista standalone on it as soon as MS releases the next major build (end of October), and since I majorly use the laptop for 3D CAD (Pro/Engineer) and huge CFD Meshing and Solving applications, I really need more RAM.

So I was thinking, I'll run Vista 64-bit on it, and get myself 2 x 2GB RAM sticks for it ... Long story short, does anybody know where I can find 2GB 667Mhz RAM sticks for the E1705, and approximately what the price range would be?

    Thanks a lot,
    Umpa

Some places, like NCIX ( www.ncix.com) have them as special order, but almost all such ram sticks are cost prohibitive. The cheapest I saw was 2GB PC2-5300 SODIMM stick for around $350US.

Wait until Vista comes out ;) 2GB sticks will drop in price eventually as they become more standard parts. It's just that no one wants that much RAM, so no one pays the premium because they only manufacture small amounts of it... chicken and egg, really. It'll come down eventually though, and there's no reason to upgrade until you need it. You'll probably save some money that way anyway.

Yeah, I might just wait til January or February to upgrade to Vista, and then get the RAM shortly after when the prices start dropping....

On the other hand, I'm considering to keep Win XP and upgrade to SP3 when it comes out. Nothing beats Xp right now as far as speed, stability and user friendlyness goes.

... Altough, I do LOVE the Vista look and all the cool new features.

4GB isn't going to be needed for Vista, even with those apps. shoot, beta 1 required 800+MB...RC1 requires ~500+MB RAM. I run XP with 650MB RAM used on boot up (I lot of extra programs that I want in the background), and 2GB is perfectly fine for anything I need.

Pro/E is probably worse than Photoshop as far as wanting RAM. And Photoshop can always use more.

$350 per stick sounds a lot cheaper than I remember. Doesn't Dell charge like $3500 for 4GB in that breifcase "laptop"?

night_2004, you obviously haven't worked with Pro/E or done any CFD meshing. YOU NEED IT ;)

Vista post-RC1 boots up with approx 450megs RAM, which compared to my Win XP with a few essential background tools at 150MB is still way too much.

$350 definitely doesn't sound too bad to me, I could easily budget that. I was surfing other forums and saw someone mention $1500 bucks per stick. now THAT would've been expensive ...

Still can't find the 2Gig sticks anywhere in stock though ...
