What processor speed is enough for a laptop to not make it slow? Is 2.0 Ghz enoughÉ 2.1É I really need some help. I heard somewhere that some processors, the more GHz you have, some of the speed is not wanted or useless.

to effectivly answer your question... tell us what you plan on doing with the laptop'

if you wanna play NEWER games like CRYSIS... you need the BEST GPU you can afford.....
but as a general rule 2ghz or higher is good enough for most anything except rendering 3d models and manipulating HUGE photos (8 mpx or higher)

2GHz is plenty unless you have got a Pentium 4, in which case you need 4GHz and a big cooling system.

A 1.5GHz dual core CPU is enough for most people. The other factors affecting overall performance are enough RAM (at least 2GB for Vista) and a reasonably fast HDD.

I have a 2GHz dual core CPU and it spends around 90% of its time cruising at 600MHz with occasional bursts of activity (see the attached graph captured just now while I am web browsing and working on a Word document). If the maximum CPU speed was 1.5GHz then the bursts of activity (the spikes on the graph) would take a bit longer. If I want to do something which fully loads the CPU for several minutes then the speed difference between 1.5GHz and 2GHz would be more noticeable.

2.0Ghz is more than enough processing power for most applications. Many people think that the cpu is the main piece of hardware which brings speed, well that is not true. If you have a fast harddrive your system will be fast even if you have a celeron single core processor and 512mb of memory.
The harddrive is the bottleneck on every system, since the harddrive is a mechanical drive and cannot keep up with the cpu and memory bandwidth.

If you are configuring your system to run vista, it is more beneficial to get 3-4gb of pc5300 memory and then a decent harddrive than to spend excessive amounts on the processor.

If you are looking at a 2.0ghz processor it is either a T7250 or a T7300, which are both good processors. However if the price increase to get a T8100 or T8300 is not great, than I would get one of them because they are more power efficient with their 45nm process technology.
You will be able to run normal games and apps fine with a 2.0ghz core 2 duo.
If you are running apps which use 100% cpu power than getting a faster cpu will be beneficial, but most of the times this is not the case.

Thanks guys. The laptop I will get but not sure which one will be mainly used for school, some games but many many documents and also internet. I wanted the internet to be quick. Thats why I was asking if a 2.0 dual core is enough :) Thanks for the reassurance

If your not doing movie/photo-editing which requires a lot of number crunching, RAM is going to play a larger role for you.

I recommend at least 2 GB.
