Hello!
Im planning to upgrade my 8510p's HDD to the fast 200GB 7K200 and use my current Fujitsu 160GB as external backup drive![]()
So I would like to get a nice case/enclosure for itBest if it supported Firewire and USB 2.0 or USB 2.0 and e-Sata.
So basically it has to be a SATA 2 to USB 2.0 and Firewire/E-Sata enclosure for 2.5" drive. I know it might be hard to get SATA to Firewire but as long as it has got a faster interface available then I should be ok [I would use it on my desktop, but my laptop doesnt have e-sata so only USB or Firewire is an option].
Thanks for any advice!!!

While this one does not have Firewire it has USB and eSATA, and I have used them for awhile. It says supports upto 100 GB, but I do have a 160 GB drive in there just make sure to FORMAT it the first time in your laptop, and it takes anything above 100 GB.

The blue light can get annoying, but it works great. I would invest in a decent USB cable as the one included has a Y splitter in it to daisy chain devices, and it breaks after a couple of months of usage.
BTW the 7K200 is a gorgeous drive the 16 mb cache really makes this drive a speed demon. -
Thanks! I will have a look! The only thing I dont understand, why would it not support HDDs bigger than 100GB??

No idea -- I formated the drive in the laptop, and popped it in the enclosure. everything is A-okay.

What drive exactly are You using in the case??

Hitachi Travelstar 5400 rpm 160 gb

Is esata is a must have :

Otherwise...
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7296
I bought SKU 7296 for bout £5 (shippings included worldwide but it takes bout 2 weeks!)
It gets about 36MBPS average on one of my 5400 rpm drive with power from a single usb port. But it seems that the speed dosnt decrese as much as time goes on USB instead of the steady drop on HD tune. -
Well, I like good speeds and I can live with USB speed while using it with my laptop, yet the best solution would be to have firewire. Since its being shipped from US is there any extra money you need to pay on top of that when it crosses the boarder??

From my opinion it should work. The only reason that comes to my head, why it would not work with HDDs bigger than 100GB is the controller in the enclosure would not support it, but after formatting and creating different size partitions it would be ok?? Im not sure.

From that website they mark the item with a lower value if its exspensive.. to aviod taxes... But $30 is under the limit anyway...
And dont go for EMS shipping.. It wont be any quicker.. all it does is basically provide extensive tracking information. -
I have popped in another 200 gb 7k200 into the enclosure without reformatting, and it recognized it just fine.

philfna - Nice
What is the limit then?? Coz pounds are very high to dollars now and I might consider getting HDD from US then -
Bump
Im not sure whether to buy a USB 2.0 with Firewire or go for E-Sata instead of Firewire?
What sort of speed can You get with e-sata??
I cant make up my mind
