I think we will see 640gb ones first. (2x320 platters). 750 for a laptop probably will never come out. It will go 640 and straight to a 1tb. (unless of course its a non standard height and has 3 platters in it.)

The first 500GB 7200rpm drive (Seagate's) has only been out 3-4 weeks. I wouldn't expect to see 640GB 5400rpm until the summer maybe. And a 640GB 7200rpm? Could be even longer.

It is technically achievable now but commercially questionable since there is likely to be limited demand until people start filling their 500GB HDDs. Given the current belt-tightening it is unlikely that a company will start producing such high-capacity HDDs just to get the kudos.

Samsung started production of their 3 platter 500GB 9.5mm thick HDD almost a year ago, but I doubt if they made much profit from it.

    Werd.

Your 1TB external is a 3.5" drive. Just remember that the shock tolerance of a powerd off 3.5" is the same as the shock tolereance of a powered on 2.5".

Man, I was hoping for a 750 GB drive to replace my 3 year old 60 gb drive :p

It is physically possible. Actually the manufacturers were going to release a 10,000rpm laptop sata drive, but near 90% of users want a quiet drive, so it would not be profitable.
That has been the main problem for mechanical harddrives. They will always make noise, and even if it is the industries quietest drive, their will be users who will complain.
So the manufacturer needs to make the drive very quiet before they can release it so that it becomes profitable.
I would think that a 750gb 5400rpm drive will be on the horizon, and maybe due by January of 2010.
a 750gb 7200rpm drive will probably not be released until third quarter of 2010.
Again these are just estimates, it could be sooner because of pressure from the SSD market.

Even when it does come out, it will be far more economical to have a small but fast hard drive (or even SSD) in your laptop, and hook up large 1TB external hard drives for additional storage.

But it's not practical for many notebook users to haul around an extra drive, especially since those externals need to be hooked up to mains power.

Well, then it just comes down to whether you really need to haul around all that data with you - do you really need it? On my hard drive, the stuff that takes up the most space (besides applications and Windows) is video files. But I know I won't need it most of the time, especially if I'm going to school, so I leave it at home on my external hard drive.

The whole point of a laptop is portability. Having to carry around stuff to give your laptop the full functionality you're seeking from a computer defeats that purpose. *insert Macbook Air joke here*

Isn't the G50vt one of the few 15" notebooks capable of handling dual HDDs? Check your notebook; the G50-series have dual HDD bays, so my suggestion is to buy x2 500GB 7200rpm Seagate drives and RAID em' to 1TB (1000GB). And that's more than 750GB - Unless if 1TB still isn't enough.

    http://209.85.175.132/search?q=cach...947+Asus+G50VT-X1+dual+HDD&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1

In fact well, I'm planning to buy x2 500GB 7200rpm drives ASAP, for my M1730.

Generally that's what I'll do for any laptop with dual HDD bays. ;) And I Know the G50vt is capable.

Yes, its more economical but 1) 3.5" drives can tolerate far less shock than laptop drives making them non-portable, and 2)they usually require enclosures with a fan which makes them loud.

I think they said 750 GB would be here by Q2, and 7200rpm version ought to be here by this time next year.

3,5" don't need an enclusure with a fan...

I have bought 3 as external USB drives and they don't have a fan and work fine.

They may work fine for a while, but heat would shorten the lifespan of a drive....

That may be true to some extent, but as long as the enclosure is designed properly (ie not a sealed, insulated box), you should be fine. We have plenty of 10 year old fanless iMacs here which are still on the original drives.

Probably a typo in the title. Under specification it says Capacity: 250 GB.

The largest 2.5"notebook hard drive at the moment is the Seagate 640GB, although very little is known about it.

portability still doesn't mean you have to have everying all the time with you.

and even then, you could have 640gb disks with you, and a notebook with one or two disk slots for another 1 or 2 640gb disks. together, that's close to 2tb. if that's not enough, dunno, i think then i would build a small portable atom based windows home server filled with disks and a wlan / gblan on, that i can plug in anywhere and access over the wlan/ gblan. then, i could have say 8tb on that box (still quite small, portable enough to stay in the car, only taken out when needed), and access my data then.

would look quite fun. i would build it so it looks like those money-boxes that always get robbed, or so. something that one can just put on the floor, plug into the powerline, and use (no cable between box and notebook needed).

that, if i would need that much data in a portable form. but i don't need that :)
