    Hi

I have sony VGN-NR110E laptop which supports 2GB max memory official each GB in each DIMM(only 2 available total with 512MB default on each).

After reading a post,I installed 2GB(new) 1 DIMM and I left 512MB 1 DIMM as it is, now my laptop has 2.5 GB RAM but I dont see any improvement in performance.

I doubt that as motherboard has limitation of 1GB per DIMM allowed, my 2GB RAM is useless, I also read that another 512MB RAM downclock my 2GB RAM as my chipset does not support 2GB RAM in 1 DIMM.

Pls let me know, otherwise I have option to send it back to dealer on my expenses :(

    Thanks
    Ab

Well, if you weren't using the RAM to start with, adding more will make no difference!
In task manager, you can see how much ram is being used - see how much if any is

And you can also right-click on My Computer > Properties and see how much physical RAM is installed....

Extra RAM will only show improvement in performance if you were using all your RAM before the upgrade. If you weren't using all your available RAM before, then adding extra RAM, which will be unused, won't really give you any improvement. How much RAM did you have before?

Also, your laptop might can support more than 2 GB. Intel stated that the GL960 chipset can only support max 2 GB, but I've seen people with 3 GB using this chipset. Same goes with the PM965, Intel stated 4 GB max, but now with the 4 GB stick just released, there are machines that can use 8 GB. The Intel spec sheets are not always updated when new hardware are being released.
