I'm looking to do some extended traveling overseas in the near future. I'm looking for an external hdd with both usb and eSATA connections. My question is does one exist? If it does, how do you power the eSATA port without a powerbrick? Can you power it through some type of usb cable? Thanks.

From a Newegg review of this 2.5" USB/eSATA enclosure:
    -----------
Manufacturer Response:That's a good question. YES, it will run w/o the adapter. We included the power adapter as our way of going the extra mile for you. We realize not all hard drives, USB ports, and USB Hubs are built equal and there will be times when you may need the external power... Example (1) When you're connected via a non-powered USB Hub (2) If you want to use eSATA but ran out of USB ports to power the device (3) If your computer simply cannot power the model of HDD that you're using. With ENC211SU31, all grounds are covered. The included USB cable has two connector heads. Connect the 1st connector under normal operation. If not enough power is going thru (indicated by a continous *beep* sound), you can plug in the 2nd connector to draw more power. If that's still not enough or if you don't have the extra USB port then - POWER SUPPLY! Hope that helps.
    ---------
So, yes, when you use eSATA you can power the drive using a USB cable, if your laptop provides enough power. If it doesn't, you'll need the powerbrick

You could search around for one of these. Here it is on ebay. Brilliant sMini is its real name.

I've got it and it works fine, but needs two USB ports, one for data and one for power (or one USB + one eSATA). It comes complete with USB, power and data cables. I bought an eSATA Express card and it worked fine (one I remembered to change the switch on the HDD to eSATA).

One thing to note is that this enclosure will connect both PATA and SATA HDDs to USB but connects only SATA to eSATA (it's essentially a pass-though connection). The enclosure is slightly bigger than most of the 2.5" size because it has a board with PATA and SATA connectors at different ends.

I had a Vantec NexStar 3 2.5" SATA enclosure with eSATA + USB 2.0. It ran fine off of one USB cord. The enclosure was very pretty but not all that durable. On the plus side it came with a case.
