    Is a 200 GB @ 7200 rpm hard drive worth a $100 upgrade from a 200 GB @ 5400 rpm?
    Or should I upgrade to a 320 GB @ 5400?

What are the speed and performance comparisons?

The 200GB 7200RPM drive will probably offer faster read/write speeds when compared to the 200GB 5400RPM drive, but similar read/write speeds when compared to the 320GB 5400RPM drive. If you think you'll need the extra 120GB of storage offered by the 320GB drive, get that. Otherwise, unless you really care about the slightly faster seek times offered by the 7200RPM drive, it's probably fine to stick with the 200GB 5400RPM drive which will run cooler and consume less power.

With what you have said? No not for most people. You can get the 200GB @ 5400 save $100. Then buy the 320GB for $135. Then buy an enclosure for $15. So for $50 more you get 320GB more storage. I think you could buy a 200GB @7200 for $100 and still have a 200GB @ 5400?

guys, I wouldnt get either. The original poster is getting severly ripped off.
You can buy a 200gb 7200rpm drive for $120 or so, and about $90 after rebate from zipzoomfly or other etailers. It is not worth it to spend $100 to upgrade over the 5400rpm drive. The best thing to do is get it with the cheapest harddrive, and then upgrading the harddrive shortly after getting the laptop. You should be able to sell the 200gb 5400 drive from your laptop for at least $70 or so, which should be able to payback for most of the cost of the 200gb 7200 drive.
What laptop are you looking at, cause that is a very expensive price increase for the harddrive. Just let us know, cause you may be able to find more value from a similar laptop from a different reseller.

I bought this package awhile ago at Bestbuy, with the Diablo Battlechest for $99 all together. However, I had a $40 gift certificate from my birthday, I won a $10 gift certificate walking into the store that day for beating an employee at guitar hero (I got lucky that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was released that day and that every employee was terrible at GH :D), and I have a 12% (or something) off coupon with me.

Sooo, I sorta had a good deal. It came with the drive, an enclosure for my old drive, and software (which I never used).

So unless you have gift certificates, coupons, and a guitar hero game is being released the day you want to buy a hard drive, I suggest buying one from newegg or zzf. Do not upgrade from whoever you are purchasing the laptop from. You can probably find something cheaper.
