Is all 200 pin ram interchangeable? I assume the two slots should contain the same matching type and voltage but can I jump up to a higher bandwidth if I am replacing both? I now have:
2 each 256MB 333MHz/PC2700 SODIMM 200 pin 2.5 volt.
I want to go to:
2 each 1GB 400MHz/PC3200 SODIMM 200 pin 2.5 volt
Yes? No?

Since you notebook uses pc2700 ram, the pc3200 will probably work, but will run at the slower speed.
I know things, things that could get me killed -
thanks for that: I went ahead and ordered two gig from mushkin at a reasonable price (not the lowest) but heard good things about them. I will just use the 2700 to be safe, I dont want any overheating problems anyway.

I have a Gateway M350WVN notebook with an OEM 256MB PC2700 DDR SODIMM. I bought a Crucial 1GB PC3200 DDR SODIMM and swapped it in last night. The machine booted up faster, but after a couple minutes the heat sink got really hot, and a minute after that I smelled burning plastic. I shut it down as fast as possible. When I went to the Gateway website's Memory Locator, it spec'd 1024MB DDR PC2700 as the max amount and type of RAM that can be installed. I thought the faster RAM would just run as the slower speed, but seems like it's causing the CPU to run too hot. Does this make sense?
Do I need to exchange the PC3200 for a PC2700 chip?
200 pin PC3200 instead of PC2700?
