The new MSI GT760 might be getting SLI. Still unconfirmed though.

this is confirmed.. M17x might get GTX480M crossfire but it will need a case redesign.. if u count crossfire , add 5870 CF in M17x.. easily way better than GTX285M SLI..

Not true, 5870MR has 70-75W tdp as well, the reported TDP is only for the core, the GDDR5 in the 5870MR is definitely hotter than the GDDR3 in the 285M.

Wow, I didn't think of that, fzhfzh. I can confirm that GDDR5 does run way hotter than GDDR3 in my extensive experience playing with desktop cards.

also the heatsinks of the the 5870 dont seem to sit flush on the cards surface leading to increased heat. could be a potential issue with cf
fzhfzh should know more about this...

Not sure if it's the heatsink or the card itself, but 5870MR definitely runs hotter than the 285M.

yeah i think the AW 5870CF version is always 'not available' because there may still be some thermal issues with the cf setup that not even the robust cooling system of the AW can handle.

could u tell me where u saw the 5870 not always being available for m17x? I see it is an option ok uk and us site... i'm quite sure that the cooling in M17x can easily handle 5870 crossfire.. its GTX480M SLI that is the problem.

Nine Series - MALIBAL this beast is pretty insane with the 1920x1200, i7-980X Extreme CPU and a GTX 480M. Still the price range is too high at about 3.4k with this setup.

Sigh, i wish they had GTX 285M X2 cards... two GPU's each having their own memory on an MXM card, so no links to worry about.

that would be great but u'd still need 2 slots... so in a way SLI laptops wouldn't become smaller.

I only browse here occassionally. Sorry if this is a rehashed topic....

It appears that fewer laptops are offered now (2010) with SLi/Crossfire than in 2008 and 2009?

Yeah, that's in general true. Mostly because of various problems with heat management, and various bugs with the chipset trying to handle the SLI/CF config.

yes this is the case as now with more powerful single cards , u don't really need dual cards to get same power.. thus only if u are super enthusiast u don't need dual cards now..

I don't think that so much as the heat and power. if you have a solution that stock scores 14,000 3DMark06 you will have a market for and SLI that can score 20,000. You still have the SLI desktop market so I am sure there would be a laptop market for it as well.

These new cards though can demand alot of power and, even more constricting, give off alot of heat. In the confines of a laptop this can be the kiss of death. Look at the Asus G73JH even with their massive CPU independent cooling solution the single GPU gets really hot even at stock speeds.

it also depends on ambient temps.. if u have high ambient temps , the GPU will get hotter... also the voltage on the G73 is higher than standard leading to higher temps compared to alienware or dell 5870 GPU's... u have to take stuff like that in account too..
