Is it me or has the price of SSD drives gone up by 30 to 40%? I bought a low end SanDisk plus 240gb for $55 at BB in Nov 2016 and now I see its $69.00 WOW! and even $80 elsewhere! Even the Z400s 256gb drive I bout last year for $59 is now $90, what in the heck is going on? I thought they were getting cheaper?

It's also probably a poor comparison if that was a Black Friday sale.

I noticed on Ebay some strange SSDs, no name from china "64/128/256 GB" variable sized SSDs from what I can understand you can have them from 64gb to 256gb, but WTF? Why would you even want to scale a 256gb ssd to 64gb? What are these, and I suspect them to be less quality

Uh it may have been, I bought it at Best Buy off the shelf after being ripped off by a bait and switch ebay buy ( paid for a 256gb and was shipped a 128gb ssd)

Here's an article from May http://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-sandisk-wd-storage-nand,31795.html
and another more recent article http://www.tomshardware.com/news/ssd-hdd-shortage-nand-market,33112.html

My read on this is that the low prices of early last year have led to an increase in demand, but fabs trying to switch to 3D NAND (and most of them having difficulty) have not increased production of 2D NAND. Add to this that Phison appears to be stockpiling NAND, banking on higher prices in the near future (and their 3Q results bear that out http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2016/11/11/2003658992 )Thus we have increased demand without an increase in supply which will drive up prices until suppliers get 3D NAND production up, or give up on it altogether and revert back to 2D NAND production. This stuff happens and it won't last.
