    Hi guys,

Well, I'm looking for a resonable monitor so I can hook up my laptop (seeing as though I don't really move it round anymore). I'd like to know if my laptop can support a resolution of 2048x1152 externally via DVI. I've been trying to find this information, but the ATI website doesn't seem to give a list of supported resolutions.

Also, I have a question in regard to 16:9 and 16:10 displays. Since my laptop is 16:10, and most of the monitors available today are 16:9, will my laptop be able to output a 16:9 ratio?

    Thank you.

Okay, I've been doing some researching, and I guess its safe to say the video card will support a resolution of 2048x1152. But the doubt is whether or not the DVI port will be able to output that resolution.

Single-link DVI, according to wikipedia, supports resolutions up 2098x1311 (16:10). But, according to some threads on NBR, some members have not been able to get past 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. Does any one have any ideas as to which it should be? The reason I say single-link is because I am not sure whether this laptop has a duel-link DVI.

To answer your second question first, the aspect ratio of the laptop's screen and the aspect ratio of the external monitor are completely independent of one another.

With regards to whether or not your laptop is capable of outputting such a resolution, there seems to be very little information out there as to whether your model of laptop or the card it uses are capable of supporting 2048x1152.
I'm afraid all I can suggest is trial and error - if you know someone with a laptop that supports that resolution, then ask if you can try it.

Thanks for your reply Step666; very much appreciated.

Well, I'm pretty sure that single-link DVI will support 2048x1152. Now, I've hit another issue; drivers. I'm not sure if Catalyst Control Center will support that resolution, since there's no way I can test it (unless I buy the monitor). Does anyone have a list of supported resolutions for CCC?

Have you tried contacting ATI's Customer Support?

When I had a resolution-related query about my desktop's 8800GTS, I contact nVidia and had a very detailed reply back in less than 24 hours.

What screen will go that high? Dual link DVI is probably the best option.

I knew it was possible on a two monitor setup, but didn't know it was possible on a single monitor setup.

I have emailed them, but a reply has not been made yet. Lets hope it is supported; 2048x1152 isn't that much more than the more standard 1980x1200/1080.

The screen I'm interested in is also a Samsung; the 2343BW. It's looks to be quite a good deal at around £160 here in the UK. The only other 23" at 2048x1152 I can currently think of is the Dell that Step666 has.

On that subject, I can't recommend the Dell enough.
When I first got my PS3, I used it with it because I hadn't yet invested in a HDTV and it was brilliant.

Well, I got a response back from ATI. They said that since its a mobile system, the manufacturer of the notebook will have details on drivers/physical support. So I guess I'm going to have to contact Fujitsu on this one. Only problem is they take a long time to respond, and their answers are not usually satisfactory.

So, I take it that you don't know anyone with a 2048x1152 resolution?

I can't remember the thread name, but it talks about how to OC by using setfsb and doing several other things as well. But one of the programs mentioned (starts with a s I believe) had a slew of information about my laptop including possible resolutions. My video card resolution can go very high up on resolution. I would check into that if you can find that thread.

Acer also has a 23" as well as a 27" using the QWXGA res.

The resolution needs to make it's way to 16"+ notebooks.

    Unfortunately, I don't :(.

I'll look into that later today. Sounds interesting.

Oh. I did some searching, those monitors look quite good. But, they're not available in the UK it seems.

Found the thread that I mentioned. But here is the link for the software I was referring to SiSoftware. Amazing product, very detailed specs.

Ah, SiSoftware is a good one indeed. But, I can't see all the resolutions it seems. It tops out at 1440x900, which is the current resolution of the laptop display. I guess it only shows the maximum connected display resolution?

Yes that is the case... it seems that depending on what GPU u have then u have a max res.. with ur GPU , i think 1920X1080 or 1920X1200 is max..

Everything is supported ;) I use my old dell laptop on 2048x1152 :p and CCC obviously supports 2048x1152, and DVI supports 2048x1152

Okay, well, I didn't get the 2048x1152 monitor. Instead, I managed to get an LG 24" 1920x1080 monitor instead, but for some off reason, it doesn't want to play ball with my laptop. It's very weird.

I've got it hooked up via DVI to my laptop, and my laptop can detect the external monitor, but the monitor doesn't display any image. It just says "Check signal cable". I have checked the cables and they are hooked in place. I have even tried a different DVI cable, to no avail. Any one have any ideas what is going on?

    Thanks

I don't have the lastest drivers, since the graphics card in this notebook has now been moved to legacy support by ATI, so they no longer release updates drivers for it. Fujistsu Siemens also seems to have given up. I was thinking about using modded drivers, but I have no idea which ones are good, and where to get hem from.

Well, an update. I have tried newer drivers and also modded drivers, but they have all failed to get a display on the DVI. I currently have it hooked up on VGA (using a DVI to VGA adapter), but I would really like to get it going on DVI.

I have tried the DVI ports seperately on both the laptop and monitor, and they both seem to be working fine. Its just when you bring them together, there seems to be no output from the laptop. The only messege I see on the display is "No signal", but the laptop recognises the display fine (resolutions can be adjusted). Anyone got any ideas as to what the solution may be?

    Thanks!

    What's the model of monitor?
Could it be something to do with the fact that it's just single-link DVI on your laptop?

The resolution of the monitor is 1920x1080, which is fine for single-link. Besides, the supplied DVI cable was also a single-link.

EDIT: The model number is W2442PA.
