    im building a laptop off the asus c90s platform and have a choice between a 8600m GT 256MB GDDR3 or 512MB GDDR2

what is the actual performance difference between the two? which one is worth the money (GDDR3 costs $70 more)?

You can check out all of the specs on pretty much every graphics card on
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/
It will tell you which card is better.

The GDDR3 is clocked at 700mhz while the DDR2 is clocked at 400mhz, so there is a difference. Whether or not thats worth it is up to you.

they only have one category for 8600m GT :( i know theres a performance difference between the GDDR3 and the GDDR2 versions, but not sure if the extra money is worth the added performance (and the lost memory)

The GDDR3 will blow away the GDDR2 even with less VRAM

The GDDR3 version will most likely average around 30% better performance. If you game alot, it's well worth the money.

That Envy of mine cost a bit more than $6000, you can check out my entire review on
    http://www.iboughtavoodoolaptop.com/stories.html

It ended up costing me $7142.38

Yeah I know I spent like 7x the normal price of notebooks, but it is an experience.
