guys, i have a $50 promotion credit from amazon. with it, the price of this drive comes down to $130 for me, and it seems to be an extremely good deal. the problem is i don't know if i really need this drive for my laptop (which, by the way, supports SATA III). do you think i should go ahead and buy it now or wait for a couple of months for the price to come down even more?

At $130 your getting it at about .50 per GB. Last year we all were wondering when it would ever get to $1.00 per GB. I would say get it now. It is fast and you will never look back.

$390 here last July, on combo with Win 7 Home->Pro upgrade (combo discount was more than the price of the upgrade, which I wanted, lol). Friend of mine bought a 128GB M4 a while back and has now filled it so just ordered a 256GB M4. Awesome drive, and a ridiculously good price!

i don't want to start a new thread about this issue, and since i've bought my Crucial M4 using this thread, i'll just ask it here:

when i received my laptop last year, i used Norton Ghost to take a complete image of the HDD before i let Windows 7 go through its initial setup process, so the image is basically a zero-day, clean factory image of the HDD. when i receive my new SSD tomorrow,

    1) can i just put that image on the SSD with Norton Ghost and have all the SSD-related options (like TRIM, etc.) working properly once i go through the setup process?

    OR

    2) do i have to use my recovery discs to to get the SSD options enabled and working?

    OR

    3) can i run Norton Ghost and clone the current HDD (with all its programs and settings) to the SSD in one go. in this case, what are the tweaks that i should be doing manually to make Windows 7 aware of the new SSD?

    OR

    4) do i have to do a clean install of Windows 7? (this is my least favorite option)

i would greatly appreciate any help :)

Got mine new-in-box here on NBR for $200, so I'm not feeling the just yet.

But this is a great deal. I'd probably bite if I were in the market.

^ yeah, i just didn't want to make another HELP ME thread given that there are a ton of them here already. the search function does not work unfortunately, so i had to use Google. i came up with my own version and cloned my HDD to the SSD successfully with Symantec Ghost.

If you got yours from the same place I just got mine, your firmware is already current. But, check it to be certain yours is firmware 000F before doing anything else.

Then, have a look at this. I'm still checking other makes and models under different conditions, so new info could appear in that thread at any time.

No. There are things you must do manually.

That won't quite do it, either.

That's probably your best option. As-is, that would be just peachy. If you want to tweak a bit more out of the performance and if you have concerns about longevity, you can optimize the OS for SSD. See the link I provided earlier. There is much information and debate all over the web regarding what to do and what not to bother with. YMMV. If you want other links to additional tweaks and debate, let me know.

This wouldn't help with SSD settings. MS failed on their claim that Win7 does automatic SSD detection and implements proper configuration.

    There's a start, for you.

thanks for your reply. but i grew impatient waiting for an answer and went ahead with cloning the HDD to SSD with Ghost on Friday. i have listed the details of the process in this thread for reference. the firmware is indeed 000F which i checked with Crucial before cloning. after that and some tweaking, i also read your thread and checked with what i had already done before. it seems like i covered most of the things you have mentioned there. but thanks again :)

Niether one of those links showed me a $179 price for the Crucial M4, Whaz-up with that? Did they go backward in pricing?

Hello, The Wiz, these were temporary deals (now expired). But don't lose your hopes because SSD prices are dropping fast lately.

And the M4 is going on sale very often. It looks as if Crucial is trying to get rid of it's stocks or outsale the competition with low prices.
