what 256GB SSD drive would perform best in a high-performance notebook?

    I like the Corsair P256 (256GB / 128MB cache / MLC)
The OCZ summit (same more or less as the aforementioned corsair)

and supertalent has an SLC 256GB HD, though I'm not sure if it'd fit.

One other question: when will the vertex EX hit 250GB, and will there be a summit EX from OCZ?

I'm a little behind on the SSD front, but I think the Supertalent SLC and the Vertex EX are the same thing. It's an Indilinx controller with SLC chips. They'll "fit" too, if you're talking about form factor.

That being said, I think the Indilinx controller are a fair bit faster than the newer Samsung controller when it comes to random speeds, and with similar sequential speeds, the Indilinx drives will offer better performance overall.

I suppose a Summit EX implies a Samsung SLC with their newer controller; I don't know if Samsung has any plans for this.

Super Talent's 256GB SLC drive uses a Jmicron controller, so it would not be optimal. An SLC based Indilinx drive would be your best bet, but you can only get them commercially in sizes up to 128GB. However, I saw Tony on the OCZ forums mention that you could order special 256GB Vertex Exs from him, the catch is you'd have to order at least 100, if I remember correctly.

Otherwise I'd say go for an Indilinx or Samsung based drive.

Wait... so what's in the UltraDrive LE series if not an Indilinx controller? Are those all seriously JMicron powered?

EDIT: Never mind, I got it. UltraDrive LE only goes up to 128GB.
