HP FireBird's 9800s are MXM 3.0, and I heard the 280m are MXM 3.0 too, or at least compatible. Is it possible I can put them on the FireBird? Btw, 280m are MXM Type B.

You're probably confusing MXM-III (the form factor, which is a MXM 2.1 standard) with MXM 3.0 (the design standard, which includes MXM-A and MXM-B).
MXM 3.0 notebooks just started being released right now, so your HP FireBird is likely using MXM-III cards. And MXM-B cards are incompatible with any MXM 2.1 slot.
Sorry, this upgrade isn't possible. -
Actually it is possible, there are in fact both MXM 2.1 and MXM 3.0 versions of the GTX 280M. The question is whether the BIOS would recognize it... perhaps it's worth a try. I am not sure if it is type III or IV though.

Whoops, good catch anothergeek.
I think the GTX 280M is an MXM-IV card though, and thus incompatible with the MXM-III slot. -

The MXM 2.1 version of the GTX 280M is a type III card. The card that was released in type IV was the 7950M GTX. All of the 8 and 9 series G92's were released as type III.
