I can get one of these little things for ~750$ from Eurocom and i was thinking about getting this 2920xm ES i found for 129$.
Pretty sick combo for under 1000$ imo, i just wanna know if it's compatible. I've seen the Sandy Bridge i5 in it before, so it would work would it not?
Chipset: Compatible to intel spec
Socket: Compatible known for sure
TDP: Comaptible, it supports the 3920xm.

Ivy & Sandy are not backwards compatible.
Thus I'd safely say that the 2920XM won't work. -
There are plenty of notebooks that can use both Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge. And considering that I've actually owned a w110er with an i5-2450M, I'd say that this particular model is compatible with SB. 1k seems like a lot to spend on a 2 year old notebook though, you could probably do better getting a newer Clevo with a 765m.

Apparently I was away for too long... Thought the chipset itself wasn't backwards compatible at the time Ivy came out.
Thanks for enlightening us. -
afaik, the HM6x chipsets (e.g. HM67) aren't forwards compatible with Ivy Bridge, but the HM7x (e.g. HM76 in the W110er) chipsets are backwards compatible with Sandy Bridge. So you're not exactly wrong, it just depends on the notebook.

lets add another sample, the 16f3 on my sig originally had a 2630QM , if gaming laptops allow it i'm not seeing any other gaming laptops whitelisting sandy bridge on an ivy board, but business class laptops are another question to ask
you also have to check with the power supply, it might be insufficient to deliver power for the complete package at maximum load
2920XM supported in w110er?
