Laptops have 2 DIMMs but some of the newer ones say they can support up to 4GB of ram, how is this so? do 2gb sticks of ram exist? and even if they do i thought only 2.8gb was recognizable anyways?
-
2GB sticks are coming.
-
Only the newer chipsets support 4gb ram (945). Also windows xp doesn't like 4gb and will recognise less than that. To fully take advantage of 4gb you need to wait for Vista that will supports something like 128gb of ram!
have a look here:

4GB is a waste of money for most users and as seba_veron mentioned 32bit Windows wont be capable of recognising all of it. I would say you might start to see 2GB sticks probably sometime next year or even probably later.
For now 4Gb in laptops is mostly a paper launch and although its good to know it can support 4GB. It is mostly useless feature.(IMO) -
all the core duo's come with those right chipset right? I was thinking of getting a Dell E1505 but want to make sure it has the 945 so i can possibly add 4gb of ram in the future?
-
Good question, how much ram can our "older" 915 Sonoma platforms take?
-
Well the thing is the Sonoma 915 can take 2GB but the 945 chipset is the centrino duo (dual core) but they all are 945 chipset however only some laptops say UP TO 4GB.. why :x
2gb of ram vs 4gb ram
