So I just got a case for my 3.5" HDD and I can't believe that it isn't compatible with W7!! How is this possible and is there anything I can do to fix it??

which case?, I have yet to have an issue with any external enclosures. make sure the drive has its power adaptor plugged in and is spinning up.

could also be a bad enclosure I have got a few duds here and there especially some of the discount ones on e-bay

It's this one here...... USB 2.0 SATA EXTERNAL 3.5 HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE CASE BOX - eBay (item 270413923487 end time Aug-17-10 00:31:03 PDT)

And here is what they wrote me about it...

Maybe it is a dud then, but they claim it won't work with W7.

I should add that when I plug it in it does get assigned a drive letter, even if the HDD isn't in the case.

sounds like the enclosure is bad. if there is no drive it should not show up a drive letter just a mass storage controller in your device manager.

Well, just got another case and this one at least has the hard drive seem to be working, I can feel it working but I still can't get Windows 7 to reconize the HDD!!

What gives? How is it possible that Windows 7 can not read an external hard drive?

Does anybody have any clues or ways to get W7 to see the drive?

Okay, I was just able to test the HDD and case on a XP Laptop and still no go, so I am assuming the HDD (Brand New WD Caviar Blue 500 GB) is defective.

So I am in the process of getting a RMA from WD.

    What a pain.
