Hi All,
I saw the new 300GB 3.5" WD Velociraptor Hard drive (10000rpm) is only a 2.5" drive with some extra cooling around it...
the extra cooling is removable, therefore we can have a 2.5" 10000rpm 300GB hard drive...
how would this go in a notebook environment?
-
True it is only a 2.5" harddrive, but it's 15 mm thick, which is thicker than regular notebook HDDs, so it will not fit in most notebooks. Most 2.5" laptop HDDs today are 9.5 mm thick.
-
That'd be f**king sweet if you could jam that in a laptop, 10k RPM. Get a couple and RAID 0 them up.
-
-
Yeah it would be, but then we'll have to deal with the heat, I'm sure that heavy duty heatsink is not for decoration.
-
I agree. Imagine the boot up times
But as many gaming notebooks are already pushing the barrier between working condition and frying condition. I don't think a 10,000 RPM HDD built for DESKTOPS would be that great of an idea. -
I will get one as soon as I get my laptop back from Canada.
The problem is, 99% of most laptops do not have a 12volt line in their sata connections. My laptop does, has been tested with a voltmeter. I also have a modifiedd harddrive bay and additional harddrive cooling. SO hopefully my painter can get my system back to me within the next few weeks, so that I can assemble it, and maybe buy the velociraptor.

Yes PLEASE K-TRON let us know how it goes, cause it sounds insane.

God, most notebooks dont even have active cooling around the hard drive, and now you want to stick a drive that requires MASSIVE cooling in that spot without its heatsink? Let me know how it goes, just let me slowly back away and take cover before you fire it up
-
yep pop it in, and show me the fireworks. but seriously the laptop is going to over heat as soon as it boots up, or even before it boots up. honestly just get a SSD

I can't say for sure whether the VelociRaptor would be a fire risk to a notebook, but I can tell you that Western Digital made it clear multiple times that the VelociRaptor is NOT rated for notebook use, is not designed for notebook use, and the removal of the Ice Pack heat sink for mounting in a notebook would void the manufacturer's warranty.
I'm not going to say it's technically impossible, but I will say that I personally would never install the current VelociRaptor in a notebook. There's a reason our review of that HDD was published over on DesktopReview.com and not here on NotebookReview.com -
The VelociRaptor actually runs really cool with and without the heatsink... http://www.legitreviews.com/article/699/7/
Also, even in desktopreview, they say it's cool, though they don't test it without it. -

I just tried to put a Velociraptor in my Dell XPS M1730 I will not even power up the drive. stinks. because our drive bay is big enough.. wonder if we can mod the connector ?
-
You most likely do not have a 12 volt line on your laptop in teh sata port.
I know I cannot upgrade to the velociraptor for some time cause my motherboard happened to die two nights ago, so I have no system right now.
I cant believe the speaker shorted out the motherboard, now I have to wait to get a new motherboard, and hope that I dont have to pay for anything other than shipping.
chrisvolker got his velociraptor for his d901/sager and he cant get it to spool up either. Its just cause almost every laptop does not have a 12 volt line in the sata controller. Luckily mine has a raid controller with a 12volt line out, I just have to hope the 12volt line has enough power to run the velociraptor. If not I will have to add an extra 12volt power line from somewhere else on the system.

spoken like a true MODer.... glad to see someone else not afraid to run a wire from a voltage point somewhere else on the MB...
you go KT -
ok, here's how i did it. i wired a addonics sata pwr supply and powerd the raptor that way. I'm also working on how to modify the motherboard and connectors on my 900t. anyone wanna help me find a board schematic?
-
or....... u can save yourselves the trouble and get an SSD that asteroids the raptor.
-
-
It is for decoration.. it also is an adapter for the 2.5" drive in a 3.5" format. The drive runs cool w/o the heatsink.

yeah, first we want to see the laptop burning, then we can suggest ssd's that outperform a raptor by a factor 2 to 100 depending on the task
-
10000 rpm HDD sounds unbelievable, hopefully it won't shake and rattle.
-
you guys are missing the point, it simply is not going to power up in any laptop, unless you can somehow power it via a 12V connection.
