I have a 500GB desktop harddrive that i want to convert into an external for my laptop since my desktop is fried. What is a good cheap one that will get the job done? It's mainly for backup so i wont have it on constantly so it doesnt need anything fancy. Thanks!

The fanless ones are normally the cheapest, but I suggest you to go with one that has a fan. This Antec one is not too expensive compared to others with a fan, and Antec is a very reliable brand.

    EDIT:

The Antec one also supposes up to 1 TB drives, the newegg info is outdated.

Or you can checkout the Rosewill Enclosures.

This one is good (w/fan and obviously with an AC adapter, + Aluminum cover and supports max 1TB)....

hmm i didnt think i would need one with a fan... like i mentioned im not going to have it on all the time, mostly just when i back up data and probably to run the occasional movie from. maybe i should emphasize, im cheap! :p Basically i want a cheap enclosure but i dont want to buy one that people have had problems with.

This is a very good solution for people that need to swap HDDs often. Only complain I've read about these is the heat, I guess it's ok if you don't keep the HDD running for a long period of time.

Antec makes a fanless one for like $30. The one Infoseeker posted is pretty good also in your case.

But I just noticed that Amazon has the one with the fan on sale for only $8 more, much cheaper than newegg's price.

I got a small tabletop fan facing my laptop on my desk; I could just put that enclosure infront of the fan too. Plus not being sealed in theory is it'll be cooler that way.

Well the fan cools me, but I put it facing the laptop so it doesn't stay constantly on me; and give me a stomachache.
