Which hard drive would be faster, a 320GB 7200RPM, or a 500GB 5400RPM?
I ask this mainly due to how various Asus M50Vm's are configured. The A1 allows the first drive, the B2 allows the latter drive.

The 320gb 7200rpm will be faster.
-
How much faster is it and which one produces more heat?
-
Depends upon the brand....
Is the 500GB - Samsung or Hitachi..??
In the 320GB-7200RPMs - WD is good, Hitachi is said to have some vibration issues (stated by PhilFlow), Seagates are fine..!! -
I know the 320GB is Seagate, but I don't know what the 500 GB is, as it doesn't say on GenTechPC.
Its for the Asus M50Vm B2, so if anyone knows the stock hard drive that model comes with, please let me know. -
I guess it might be the Samsung 500GB 5400RPM drive since it is being offered as standard and at a lower rate than the other HDDs....(The Hitachi is fairly expensive and won't fit most laptops due to its greater depth - 12.5mm)

Definitely go for the Seagate, the Samsung will be more hot, will consume more power and is slower than the Seagate 7200.3....!! -
In a perfect theoretical world all being equal, areal density and all. The 7200 is 33% faster than the 5400. The 320GB is only 25% smaller. So in a perfect world at lest sustained reads or writes you are looking at about 8%?

^^ So post the 320? Am even close?
Andy PC6400 CL4? Celeron? Talk to me? -
Same old OCing....
CPUcool - FSB = 200MHz
Ram - PC2-6400 CL6; Downclocked to PC2-4200 CL4 (Due to FSB OC at 800MHz CL4)
Celeron 2.4GHz
I guess it is a 20% increase for the Seagate over the Samsung, right..?? (I suck at math) -
RA was 8% (7.6%) 1 out of 3 ain't bad. Average 20% wow. Also notice the 320 has artificial low minimum as it was getting pinged?
-
Yeah, I see that (Maybe because the Seagate benchy wasn't done by an NBR user
)
OP: Seagate 7200.3 Hands Down
[Samsung should quit makin' HDDs (high temp, high power consumption, low performance), they're only good making LCDs and Plasmas, I guess]Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

In real life the 320GB/7200rpm will be faster than the Samsung 500GB. Check these benchmarks.
The Samsung 500GB has slow acces times and uses a lot of power:
"While Samsung squeezes amazing transfer rates out of the standard 2.5“ form factor, the slow access time and 10-25% increase in power consumption is not acceptable for a system hard drive."

I recommend building in your own harddrive because Seagate 7200.3 does not appear to be the fastest. Western Digital 320GB/7200rpm would be a better choice. -
What would it take to alter the hard drive in a system?

Have a look at John's post in this thread:

I'm getting the WD Scorpio 320/7200 next week, wait until then.
