Besides the obvious speed boost, I've heard claims that the 7200 actually runs cooler and consumes less battery power. Is this true?
-
If that was true, 10,000rpm drives must be the coolest thing.
-
They do not run cooler or use less power, however, they dont run that much hotter or take that much more power like some people think.
-
But they cost more for a minimal difference. I'd go with a 5,400, except if the price difference is really small.
-
also, consider the temperature your current hdd is running @. if it's in the 50's during idle temps, i'd hesitate getting a 7200 rpm hdd.
-
Price difference is roughly $90. How MUCH faster do you think it is? 5%? 20%?

Check the benchmarks if you want exact figures. There has been a few of the 320gb 7200rpm

For power saving Hitachi seems the best option at the moment, either 7200rpm or 5400rpm. This is because of the energy saving functions.
But if you're after speed, have a look at OCZ Core. They're very cheap for SSD.
