well, title says most of it. ive just got a new HP dv5 1015ea, and it has this "3D Sound Blaster Pro compatible sound". ive looked all over the computer to find something that says sound blaster like you get with creative products, but theres nothing on here. all it has to control sound is an "IDT HD audio CODEC".

a lot of ram is being used by a program called audiodg.exe which im asuming is the soundcards shared memory workings. but it has sometimes gone up to 700MB usage! this normally happens after a couple of hours of playing music, but it can only be freed up by a reboot.

are there any drivers (generic or otherwise) i can get that will work better than this crappy IDT audio codec? they need to be HD drivers however as the computer has a blu-ray drive.

    cheers

Only the codec manufacturer makes the drivers for their codec chip. I don't understand why HP doesn't use Realtek because they make practically the best chips and software to support them.

audiodg.exe is part of Vista, but it only uses 9 MB on my machine... so if it's using a lot of mem then something's wrong and it's probably the drivers.

Try going to Device Manager and uninstalling the sound driver and seeing if the sound works with Windows' built-in sound driver. I don't have your sound chip, but the built-in driver works fine for my Sigmatel and it might work for your IDT chip too.

cheers, but that wouldnt let me change the EQ levels or anything would it? while i was google-ing for drivers i read something about IDT taking over sigmatel...

"In 2006, IDT took over the audio codec chip production from SigmaTel, which is usually identified as STAC."
