Short story: I have an Alienware m17x R3, and I plan on upgrading the graphics card (think mine is dying). I'll either be getting a GTX580m, or a GTX680m. The main point for me seems to be that with the 680m, specifically when in an R3, the 3D capabilities won't work from what I understand. So I need some feedback on what would be a better option, getting the 680m with no 3D, or the 580m and the possibility of 3D. I've never had the opportunity to try any 3D computer gaming, so anyone with input on how good/worthwhile it is would be appreciated.

I'd get the 680M. This is the best GPU available for the time being, and will blow you away. You can later get an external monitor that is 3D, if the 680M doesn't allow it, but I'm pretty sure it does.
Confirm your theory by speaking with a representative here on the forum before proceeding. I'm sure the 680M will accommodate a 3D screen without issues. -
How can I contact a representative here? A bit new, sorry. And from what I saw, its something to do with the m17x R3 bios/3d controller not working with the 680m.

Definitely the better GPU, anyways it's not like you can really push 3D with high settings at 1920x1080 with a 580m.

As we both said above, go with the GPU. The 680M itself is more powerful than dual 580M's in SLI. -

You're laptop screen has to be 120hz to do 3d. You might be able to upgrade it, I don't think any special cables are required, although the way Alienwares design their LCD assemblies you probably have to buy a whole assembly.
Sucks.
