I know for my configuration I can't expect too much, but arent these scores a little bit low for my system? My system RARELY went over 1 FPS the entire test.

try an earlier version of 3dmark. that is a bit too low.... go into bios and check that everything is set correctly (clock speeds, voltages, etc etc...)

Ok I will do that shortly. What kind of voltage should I be looking for in the bios? And as you can see with my signature, 3Dmark05 produced signifigantly better results. Could it really be that different for 06?

The 8400 is a very low end card. But your graphics scores shoul def be higher than "500".... are you running the newest drivers? (or any drivers at all? :p)

Oh, and voltages effect reliablity and heat, not 3d performance.
GPU clock speeds are not available in bios, try "gpuz" (google it)

If you want, try some drivers from (laptopvideo2go) google it

    Edit:
Your overall score in 3dmark 05 is in the 2k?
This sounds more and more that your not even running graphics drivers.

Notebookcheck shows a range of 3DMark06 results from 1100 to 1600 for the 8400M GS.

    What resolution is your display?

Well sir my nVidia driver version is 7.15.11.5669 released 10/4/2007. It does seem old, but I cannot for the life of me find a newer one.

currently my res is 1440 x 900, but 3Dmark ran in 1280 x 800 (or so it says in the main screen, I can't change it because I have the free version)

Did you try the nvidia site?
If there isen't one there, go to (laptopvideo2go) and download a desktop driver with a moded inf.

Yeah I tried Nvidia. I'm actually rather disapointed with the site, if you look up a driver for the 8400m card, it says "you must visit laptop manufacturer website for driver update"

voltages are for performance, but clock speeds could be set improperly, and changing those may need a change in voltage.

what i am suggesting is that he check the specs on his equipment and check if the settings in bios match up.

Download the modded INF, and overwrite the one in the directory you extracted the driver to. It says no gpus available because its a desktop drvier.

Yup, that one should work even without the modded INF

Yeah, but u can't check that in bios, which is why I recommended "gpuz"
In a laptop, changing the cores to the normal value will not require a change of voltage... The bios, since it was MADE for a certain video card, knows what the idea voltage is for the standard clock. You could be right if this were a desktop.

Ah the frustrations! Ok, so after a very slow, and repeatidly stopping download from laptopvideo2go, i finally got the vista 177.81 file download (for my card) and when i open it, 7zip says "cannot open bla bla bla file.exe as archive" , so i decided to download the vista 177.92 (the newest version they have) instead, and just use the modded INF file. got it downloaded, replaced the INF file with the new one, and ran setup. So it goes into the installation, acts like its installing files, then finishes and says "setup complete, your machine has not been modified" and it surely hasnt, driver version and dates are still the same? Whats the deal?

Alright so I got the 177.81 files to install, I just redownloaded the file. Re ran 3DMark06, and got the results of 1248 3Dmarks, 416 SM2.0, SM3.0 463 and CPU 2150. Not alot better, but I guess it's an inprovement.
