    Hi
i have an Asus A8JP bought on Dec 2006. It currently has a DDR2 667 MHz (2X 1GB) Ram running dual channel.

I'd like to upgrade this notebook to the maximum ram allowed by the i945pm chipset which ranges between 2.87GB to 3.1~3.4GB. So what is the recommendation (2X2GB DDR667Mhz forming 4GB or 1X2GB 667Mhz w/ 1X1GB 667Mhz forming 3GB)?

    Thanks!

Run CPU-Z and see what chipset you have, if you have the 945GMS the max you can run according to Intel is 2GB's. If you have the 945GM or 945PM you should be able to use between 3GB and 3.5GB so if you put in 4GB you will get more and all you can see will be "true" Dual Channel.

I would suggest getting a 2 gig stick, and going with 3 gigs of ram, unless you really need that extra gig to make it four.

the 3GB will result in 2.87GB usuable memory, which i can live with, but 4GB will result in 3.X GB (where X is between 1 to 5). what are the pros and cons of each config?

my chipset is the i945PM according to CPU -Z

Go here and tell me the max amount of RAM. I don't see why you should have a problem getting the system to recognize a full ~4 gigs

How much memory can my computer handle?

    A: 2048MB.

Adding the maximum amount of memory will improve performance and help extend the useful life of your system as you run increasingly demanding software applications in the future.

Though the scanner has told me i can go max 2GB only, but i tried with a 3GB config with the i945pm chipset, which several similar computers had their ram maxed and could go over 2GB limit which was limited by Asus website. My computer went to read 3GB installed with 2.87GB useable. I have not tried the 4GB config though....

addon the i945pm has a weird limitation that doesnt allow reading of a full 4GB memory as far as i see from my own research.

Right now, 3 gigs of RAM sounds good for you, unless you get a 4 gig (2 x 2 gig) package for cheaper, which then you have a dual-channel setup, which might SLIGHTLY increase performance.

System64.....I have had to delete posts and threads you have made on the exact same topic. That is called cross posting and is against the forum rules and can result in an infraction. Please keep all discussion on this topic in this thread.

A dual channel should always be the preferred setup; and it will most definitely increase performance.

yes i would get dual channel 4GB anytime.. but even if it works , only 3GB will be usable... but there's the possiblity that ur laptop won't boot with 4GB installed.
