Hi, graphics cards are possibly the most confusing choice a buyer has to make and while there are very good guides like Chazmans I felt that I needed something more. While 3dmark05 is not the definitive graphics benchmark or the only way to measure the performance of a graphics card it does provide an easy way to understand what a card is capable of.

The score can be affected by CPU, Chipset and drivers hence why their is such a large range in numbers, The scores I have used are from a wide range of manufacturers and reviews of different notebooks, the lowest score is the rounded score of the lowest mark I found while the highest is a rounded score of the highest I could find. All benchmarks are from either the mobility or Go cards not their desktop counterparts. I have not included mem or core frequencies as some manufacturers alter them to provide more stability. All results are from 1024x768 with Anti-aliasing turned off.

First up are the Ati cards
    X200 128mb (shared ram) 500-600
    X300 64mb 600-850
    X300 128mb 1200-1400
    X600 128mb 1100-1700
    X600 64mb 1000-1200
    X700 64mb 1476
    X700 128mb 1900-2600
    X700 256mb 2700-2800
    X800 256mb 3300-3900
    X1400 256mb dedicated + 256 shared 1600-2300
    X1600 256mb 3700-4500

    Now we have NVIDIA
    6200 256mb (shared) 900-1100
    6600 128mb 1600-2500
    6800 ultra 256mb 5100-5400
    6800 256mb 2800-3900
    7300 256mb (shared) 1625
    7400 128+ 384shared 1800-2200
    7400 128mb 1700-2100
    7800GTX 256mb 6100-6500

    And last...and least
    Intel GMA950 128mb (shared ram) 450-570

So you might ask what do these results mean? Well to be honest Not a lot 3dmark05 measures various areas of the graphics cards performance One example being the 7400 and the x1400 The 7400 has half the memory bus of the x1400 yet generally it seems to get a higher score. The scores will give you a Idea on how they perform against each other in a very general way. It also shows the impact the amount of dedicated Vram has on the score.

If you have a score outside of the range please let me know and I’ll update the guide.

My 6600 gets ~2500 using stock drivers, and stock clocks (375/600). It's in the review of my system.

That 1700 score was at stock frequencies, the only difference from someone running one they just bought was that I had updated the drivers.

Yeah, you can overclock the X700 and get higher scores, but I assume you're going for stock scores. In that case, my X700 256MB benches about 2800 in 3DMark05, which is right in line with your measurements.

I moved it to the Guide section as requested. :)

    Hi matt,

Good info. x700 128DDR on default 350/300 gives 2270. That is in your margins. :)

Nice article. Certainly shows with the overlapping ranges the various video cards get why it's hard to say one "similar" card is definitively better than another.

yup, 128 dedicated ram. I'm still not sure if I'm keeping this i6000-think I still have until Monday before the 21days 'CSG' expires(from delivery date).

    I have an E1505 waiting to be unpacked - I'll test the X1400 - 128m w/ Hypermemory.

4498 3Dmark's for the Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi without OC.
    T2500 , X1600, 2GB ram so X1600 is 256 Dedicated and another 256 Hypermemory.

    An X1600 got 4514!? That is sounds really high. I have a 6800 and I got 4157 stock. And 4987 OC'ed. A 6800 should be more powerful than a X1600.

Not necasarily, the x1600 is the new generation while the 6800 is old, maybe if you compared them in 3dmark04 the scores would be different.
