Hi I apologize in advance if this question has already been answered in these forums, however Im looking at the Intel Core 2 Duo processors and they have either 479 or 478 pin set configurations. What is the difference???

Try reading this which should help explain a bit.

As far as I can ascertain, socket 478 is Prescott Pentium 4s etc, which use 478 pins. Pentium-Ms and Celeron-M 300s use a socket called 479. While that only has 478 pins, it is incompatible with socket 478 hence the change of name.

I *think* but someone feel free to correct me, that the Core 2 Duo and Celeron-M 400 (not sure about the regular Core Duo and Solo, could apply to them too) have a 479 pin configuration, but as intel can't call it socket 479 as they have already used that name, they have called it Socket-M.

Yes, Celeron-M 400 series, Core Solo, Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo reside on the 479-pin Socket M, which is incompatible with socket 479. Socket 478 was designed for desktop use, for the Pentium 4 / Celeron.
