    Has anyone tried these?

Doesnt seem too expensive and I have read on OCN that the L4 cache seems to help out with minimum and average FPS. I just got the 4930mx again and am in the process of modding the heatsink to push the max speed a bit more.

If the 4980hq is indeed better than my 4930mx then I will likely use it 24/7 but Im also interested in doing comparison test if I can get my hands on one of these.

Anyways just curious on your guys' thoughts

    Peace

I've had a play with the 5775CI have in a HTPC The L4 EDRAM is good for decreasing the latency on main memory. . ~35ns vs ~70ns on the same CL10 DDR3 1600 on an Ivy Bridge mobile CPU for working data between RAM size and L4 size (128Mb). It allowed the 3.3ghz 5775C to basically equal the 4ghz 6700K in gaming benchmarks. The gains will be lessened if you have 32gb of faster memory.

Well if I had this chip I would basically forgo bandwidth overclocking in favor of tighter timings on the system ram, while keeping it at 2133mhz then see if 2400mhz is obtainable just for the epeen.

I'll have to figure out how to order from taobao as I have never done it before, but I do intend on getting one of these chips for the ranger.

When intel first came out with eDRAM L4 cache processors I was hoping it would be a trend that would stick and extend to PGA processors, including the desktop realm. While the eDRAM was meant for the iGPU, it substantially helped CPU tasks as well, bringing Broadwell IPC up to and sometimes exceeding Skylake IPC. Imagine if the 9900K came with an L4 cache. The gaming performance would be astounding.

I was hoping that with Zen 2 that AMD would push for an HBM L4 cache with 8 cores instead of going for 16 cores. A 4GB HBM stack would effectively turn main memory into swap space and bring major IPC improvements.

Yeah I just saw that it didnt load on mobile til like 3-5 minutes later.

Ill order once I get home to the 13 R3, thanks for the link. Hopefully it works and hopefully it doesnt throw a fit over disabling the iGP for eDP function on the Ranger.

I already have the 4930mx and while it would be a pain I can do comparisons and if the 4980hq is indeed better then I will sell off the 4930mx.

Assuming you can keep both at the same clock level, it should be ~10% faster in theory due to L4. Also, while not technically fully unlocked, Its either 4.4ghz or 4.6ghz all core max turbo bin, I forget. Still more than enough for a stock or copper heatsink tho

Im expanding the heatsink by about 30% and also adding a second heatsink that I am hoping to make a cooler for the VRMs and additional heat dump from the main heatsink. Time will tell, but 4.6Ghz should be more than enough, provided I can keep the VRMs cool.

Either way, should be fun to tinker with, provided I get the time to do it in the first place.

Ok its ordered now, I have to wait about a week for payment to clear I guess and then it might be one more week after that.

Well, paypal has been drafted so I guess I just have to keep an eye on the order and make sure all goes well.

If this doesnt want to work with eDP for w/e reason then I still have options on the table. Just sell the 1070 and go back to the WX7100. Assuming it works of course.

Hello guys do you think this 4890hq could work on a Clevo p157sma (now I have a 4800mq) that has Nvidia optimus and premamod?
Would this help with my poor 1866 CL 10 ram in cpu bound games like bfv?
    Thank you

It would help but unless you find precedent you will be the first to test if it works.

There shouldnt be any reason that it wouldnt work but laptops are picky.

It won't help much because BFV needs more than 4 cores and fast DDR4.

I cant math this early and on so few hours of sleep but I'm pretty sure it was like 5 usd so far.

I still have to pay for shipment so it may go up as well.

EDIT: To make the point clear, I didnt remember posting this at all.

But yes, they take a small fee to order it, then I pay them to ship. Very eager to for them to get it and then get it to me.

@TheReciever Do you know of what fans are better than the stock CPU fan? I was looking at the "Turbo Fan" and although its cheap, it looks like its going to take a fair bit to ship out and arrive

I have a couple of those fans. It's either that or the aw14 cpu fan.

The seller is pretty quick on turn around from my experience. A couple weeks is the maximum time but usually it's a week plus or minus a few days especially with airpak

    Are both plug and play?
And does it matter which AW 14 model (M14X R1/R2 vs AW 14) the fan is from or are they the same?
If the turbo fan is better, would you consider selling one of yours?

I mean I suppose I could always sell one of mine, but one (I Just discovered) has one of the screw placements broken, and the M14x R2 CPU fan (which is the one I meant to state earlier, memory is hazing with all the work at the moment) has been modded. Really its just cutting off one of the placements so it can be installed just as it was displayed in another thread.

I think I broke the securement on it myself, I dropped it a couple of times when my room was getting a bit messy, I used it to test with the WX 7100 last night which failed sadly. Moving on to installing the 1070.

I cant say which one would be better, as I messed up my aftermarket heatsink trying to force more contact pressure. Then the 4930mx died so I never really got back to testing that side of things.

That being said I am working on that slowly, for now just making sure the 1070 works so I put my mind to rest on that front, then I will approach the CPU side of things again with more enthusiasm.

    UPDATE:

Superbuy just got the 4980hq and I have just paid for shipping via EMS. ETA is 5-10 Business days. Hopefully it all works out!

I'll let you know, ETA is tomorrow on mine. I'll likely see if it works in the E6440 first, then this.
As for fans, I'll try and come up with a list to ask you about, so far I've seen the M17X R2 and R3 fans which look promising, but I have no info if they work or not. M14X R2 fans seem to be gone as well. LMK if you can part ways with either, it also seems like my heatsink has gotten warped or this board seems to have bad mounting.
    Thanks again!
Also, do the M14X R2 and the M14X R1 use the same fan?

I don't know off the top of my head about the difference in revision.

I can part with either or both I have extras.

Yeah I will need a new heatsink also, stock works fine but isn't great for overclocking in my opinion. Larger mass and more heat pipes are the starting point then I have other plans after that.

Welp, me being the idiot I am, I forgot to tell them to leave it at the door and not to wait for me to sign, so guess I'll have to wait tomorrow.
At the same time, debating replacing my AW board as the ODD connector seems to have been shoddily soldered on, so might exchange it for another.

    @Grant B Gibson

Its worth noting that I did see someone did need to adjust the microcode but that was one instance. Not sure if it will be needed for our platforms (Ranger or E6330).

My board is no longer posting even with NVRAM resets, no idea what I did wrong, replacing it anyways. Tired of this honestly, going to try and get a refund but if not, giving up on this Ranger honestly.

Its a learning process, and certainly a labor of love to be sure.

I had 3-4 failed GPU upgrades, 2 dead CPU's, 2 dead motherboards. This wasnt my first machine and I had modded laptops in the past but this is the first laptop that required chassis mods to get where I wanted with it. The disappointment has been immense, but the knowledge gained has been equally sizeable.

Just something to think about when you make your choice to part ways or not.

I paid extra for better packaging, so here's hoping it arrives in use-able condition, my order has just been shipped.

Just a warning, the pins on the bottom are **VERY FRAGILE**, seemingly so more than normal.
Have your laptop prepared, socket bare and all, to transport it from the casing it arrives in to put it in the socket.

The chip should fit any 4th gen mobile Haswell platform. In CPU-Z it will still report as BGA.

To anyone that is interested in doing this.

Even in desktops there were some teething issues. I think it's highly likely that you WILL NEED TO flash Crystalwell microcode to your platforms.

So if installed in your laptops and it doesn't work out of the box then it's quite likely that you or someone that knows how (not me lol) will need to update your platforms microcode with Crystalwell magic.

On desktops sometimes it would bluescreen or voltages wouldn't report correctly. So just something to consider when and if you try this out. I'm pinging @javers because he was a great guy with giving us ranger owners options with the unlocked bios so I'm hoping he or someone else may be able to aid us once more!

But of course! everything starts and ends with epeen. lol

Secretly though, I have seen some Cinebench runs with the 4980hq scoring about 955. I want to crack 1000 so that will be my goal for the CPU side of this project.

Yeah this was with a 4980hq @ 4.6-4.7Ghz so I have to modify my CPU heatsink quite extensively to displace the heat as best I can...its not exactly orthodox but its a DTR so Im not worried about mobility. When ever it moves its planned. The 13 R3 is my day to day mobility machine.

Have never seen 955cb with stock clocks :) If I got that score from my 7700K running stock clocks I would be disappointed. Even angry  But nice seeing Haswell in laptops at that score.
