I have the 4GB OCZ sticks that merge into any notebook I buy. Previously, I would get 2.99 to 3.1GB available on both XP and Vista 32bit. My new XPS reads a whopping 3.5+, should I be excited or would it still perform the same? This is on a 32bit vista home premium. How come this is the first time this happens with me?

hope you know why this stuff happens...... however the number of bits allocated for non core memory functions (video, devices etc) will vary from platform to platform. maybe your m1330 with santa rosa has more bits allocated towards memory and less towards peripheral functions than your previous systems. so this system can map more memory on 4gb sticks than your previous ones

So you mean to tell me that the machien cannot handle 4GB. That is incorrect. it will recognize the full 4GB if you are using 64bit vista or a 64bit os such as one of the linux variations. the only downside is I don't think you can watch DVD movies using LInux

i was talking specifically about the 32 bit OS. moreover its a no brainer that 64 bit OS can support more than 4GB memory

    Do you have SP1 installed?

I have a Dell E1405 running XP home with patriot 2x2gb that displays 3.5 GB of ram in use.

in theory, 32bit machines should accept exactly 4gb, 2^32 xD

    .............. ya really, math, 2^32 = 4,294,967,292 bytes
    = 4,194,304 kilobytes
    = 4,096 megabytes
    = 4 gigabytes.

But there are issues with memory mapping or w/e, something like that.

As he said, IN THEORY, 2^32 = 4 GIGABYTES!

not in practice. not all 32 bits of the processor address register are addressed to core memory. many bits are reserved for video card, PCI(ex) peripherals, southbridge devices etc. to find out more

    = 4,194,304 kilobytes
    = 4,096 megabytes
    = 4 gigabytes.

ok so in order to get more memory i would have to disable or uninstall some of my periphials................B.I.N.G.O......... I hear Apple calling me with a Mac BOok Pro. PC/windows platform will be dead soon. Also on a side note i have seen someone load vista on a mac book pro... not dual boot and surprise how is it that the mac book pro sees and uses the entire 4gb
