Hey guys, I am planning to buy an ASUS A450JN-WX027H as my new laptop. It has the nVIDIA GT840M as its graphic card. As I've got a monitor with 4K resolution (3840 x 2160), I'd like to connect the laptop to that monitor via an HDMI cable.

However I read from its specification ( http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-840m/specifications) that it only supports 2560 x 1600 output. (I am not sure about that.)

Does anyone know whether this graphic card supports 4K output to an external monitor? Thanks!

It looks as if the 8xxm series needs the GTX (minimum 850) for the support you want under display port.

4K looks nice but causes all sorts of scaling a$$-pain for regular usage and kills FPS. For movies I think it looks great, but for gaming I just dont see the payoff.

I think I've seen somewhere something about Intel build in GPU supporting 4K with no problem (doesn't all video, even from Nvidia have to go through intel gpu anyhow?), so I'm not sure why Nvidia would have this resolution restrictions and shouldn't 4k work using intel graphics even if nvidia doesn't support it?
Now, I agree with other poster that playing games in 4k even on GTX 850 or 860 maybe asking too much, since 4k has 4 times as many pixels to render as 1080p, but I don't see why one shouldn't be able to view pictures or 4k video in full glory. As a matter of fact all my home video are done on my phone in 4k and I'm planning to buy 4k tv soon and my computer will be the only source capable of full 4k resolution, or at least I hope so. But OP should be aware there is whole mess regarding this topic, for example not only Windows don't scale some of the programs properly, when using 4k, but also I'm not sure HDMI supports 4k yet, so you may need display port, but media center for example doesn't support display port for protected content, so if you want to watch original DVD, BR or cable TV you need HDMI or DVI port. I'm already running into those issues, since I use my gaming laptop to watch cable TV using silicon dust with cable card and when I buy 4k tv, display port may be needed, but then I can't watch cable TV, or at least it will be down sampled.
