I read somewhere that the spdif connection on laptops could be used to connect to a 5.1 speaker system without having to buy a soundcard like the Soundblasters Audigy 2 ZS. Specifically speaking, I am trying to do this on a Thinkpad T60 and Logitech z5500 speakers. Does anyone know if this is possible?

If the T60 have a combination 3.5mm optical/analog audio port. All you need is a optical cable with 3.5mm jack on one end and toshlink on the other end and you get 5.1 from the Z5500.

Which brings me to my next question, does the T60 have it?
This site says the spdif is included: http://laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=112&part=specs
But this site says that its part of a dock (scroll down to best dock option):

So I am confused as to whether it has it or not? -
Have no idea, the lenevo site didn't even mention spdif at all.

the simplest way is to simply look on the side of your laptop. All the audio output connections are usually on the same side.
An S/PDIF port looks like a "button" and it is always black. In the picture, the S/PDIF port is the one that says "coaxial" on the left in the red box.
