I am thinking about buying a 500GB External Harddrive. I am trying to pick between the Seagate FreeAgent Go VS Western Digital My Passport Essential. What are some pros and cons of both? Which is the better buy?

    Thanks!

I swear by WD. I own a 500GB passport (powered by single usb cord) and I love it.

I've heard good things about seagate too, the computer at my job has a 30gb seagate in it that has logged over 3 years of uptime.

I have two of the WD Passports (320GB and 500GB) and really like them.

With that said, the most recent redesigned WD Passport Essentials (more rounded edges) have a proprietary micro-usb connector which is getting bad press because of contact issues.

If you go with a WD Passport Essential try to get the older design with the standard mini-usb connector (like a cell phone connector). Most stores still have stock of the previous design. The drives in both designs are the same.

I have liked the design of Iomega min drives. The rubber wand around the drive serves as a nice shock protector. Dunno what drives they use though. WD drives are good, but their enclosures are so so. Except for the WD "Elements" enclosures, they have rubber caps at the ends.
