    Hello,

I have a Dell Vostro 1710 and i have ordered a cable for the second HD via Dells technical support.

Now i want to buy a 500GB drive.
There are two drives which are interesting for me.
The first is the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 and the other is the Hitachi 5k500.

Which i the better dirve? does anyone hove both?
is the Seagate much louder or warmer?

Is the Seagate much faster than the Hitachi?
Is the warranty from Seagate 5years?
    Is the ICH8M a SATA 300 Bus?

    Any Ideas or opinions?
    Thank you

Seagate no longer offers a 5 year warranty on their laptop drives. They only offer a 3 year warranty.
Your Vostro supports all SATA 300 drives so you are able to run any SATA 2.5" 9.5mm thick drive you desire.

You should not look at the 5K500. It is a 12.5mm thick drive.
The Hitachi 5K500.B is the drive you should look for.

As far as performance, the 5K500.B outperforms the first few batches of 7200.4's from seagate.
Seagate apparently updated the drives firmware and it performs better now.
However I have not seen any real life benchmarks which support Seagate's claim.
The only real life benchmarks I have seen show the 5K500.B beating the 7200.4. But that is the first 7200.4

The 7200.4 should in theory be faster, but the 5K500.B is definitely more power efficient.

Either way, neither of the drives are slouches, so your going to get a fast drive regardless of which you pick

ICH8M is a 3Gbps capable SATA interface. Though some manufacturers have bios capped it to 1.5Gbps. Running in 1.5 or 3Gbps won't make any real difference with SATA HDDs. It will with latest batch of SSDs capable of 200+MB/s. If interested, can check your CAP.ISS value to determine if there is a bios implemented 1.5GBps mode, in which case can ask Dell for a new bios to remove the capping.
